Public Religion and Urban Transformation: Faith in the City (Religion, Race, and Ethnicity)From Brand: NYU Press

American cities are in the midst of fundamental changes. De-industrialization of large, aging cities has been enormously disruptive for urban communities, which are being increasingly fragmented. Though often overlooked, religious organizations are important actors, both culturally and politically in the restructuring metropolis.

Public Religion and Urban Transformation provides a sweeping view of urban religion in response to these transformations. Drawing on a massive study of over seventy-five congregations in urban neighborhoods, this volume provides the most comprehensive picture available of urban places of worship-from mosques and gurdwaras to churches and synagogues-within one city.

Revisiting the primary site of research for the early members of the Chicago School of urban sociology, the volume focuses on Chicago, which provides an exceptionally clear lens on the ways in which religious organizations both reflect and contribute to changes in American pluralism.

From the churches of a Mexican American neighborhood and of the Black middle class to communities shared by Jews, Christians, Hindus, and Muslims and the rise of "megachurches," Public Religion and Urban Transformation illuminates the complex interactions among religion, urban structure, and social change at this extraordinary episode in the history of urban America.

Review

"Rich in cultural analysis, thick description, maps, photographs, and anecdotes, this book should be read by scholars, policy makers, religious leaders, and anyone who wishes to better understand one of the most exciting stories on the American urban landscape at the turn of a new century."

-Robert Michael Franklin,President, Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, Georgia

"This book presents the initial results of a team-based ethnographic study aimed at understanding better the richness of religious life in the multiplicity of communities that make up modern Chicago.”

-Journal of Contemporary Religion

"The highly successful result of a team-based, ethnographic approach to understanding the diversity-racial, ethnic, cultural, economic-of Chicago's religious communities, exploring important questions about religion's public role in the metropolis. A must read for those interested in the religious diversity and pluralism of American society or contemporary urban restructuring."

-Penny Edgell Becker,Department of Sociology, Cornell University, and author of Congregations in Conflict

"An interesting example of the challenge immigrants face as they attempt to emulate established American institutions while retaining those elements that allow them to function as cohesive communities of ethnic and religious identity."

-Yvonne Yazbeck Haddad,Professor of Islamic History, Georgetown University

"It will alter - or perhaps confirm - your thinking about 'public religion' and how traditional and immigrant congregations address (or don't) member and community needs and attitudes and actions towards larger social issues…an obvious choice for religious and congregational studies and urban sociology programs. It is also valuable reading for any cleric or layperson interested in how contemporary urban religious collectives are shaped by and help shape the lives of their own members, surrounding communities, and the larger society.”

-Congregations

Rich Discourse Intersection of Religion, Urban, and Social Change
By Alicia Crumpton
This book documents a process designed to learn about religion in urban America and the outcomes from a multi-year study. The edited volume contains descriptions of organizations, congregations, and neighborhoods who graciously agreed to 'be studied.' The rich discourse afforded through the case studies, the conference on Religion and Community in Restructuring a Metropolis and the five Neighborhood Forums on Religion in Chicago provide a wonderful basis from which to consider religion in urban contexts. The editor Livezey noted, "we have witnessed a complex interaction among religion, urban structure, and social change" (p. 6). Urban areas, Chicago is but one, faced postindustrial growth and its challenges including: "economic polarization, spatial dislocations, and the lack of public authority" (p. 7). Further Livezey goes on to describe urban changes in latter part of the 20th century including what he termed the "refocus of moral culture" (p. 16) and the effects of this refocus on religion and the church. Ten narratives are provided for varying congregations and descriptions of how those congregations responded to urban change. Some findings:
1. "Churches, temples, synagogues, and mosques produce the cultural material that enables their members. . . to locate themselves with respect to the places and time in which they currently live, to identify with others, to find their moral bearings, and to achieve some measure of efficacy..." (p. 21)
2. Congregations' "cultural innovation is in part theological" (p. 22).
3. Congregations' "are engaged in cultural activities that have a prominent moral dimension" (p. 22).
4. Congregations "social accountability and the authority they attribute to their respective traditions contrast markedly with the individual moral autonomy sustained by the secular culture" (p. 23).

To read a book providing example after example of congregations positively striving to build community, create social cohesion, and social bonding in a day and age when the media is replete with examples of religious people focused on anything other than community is refreshing. I felt affirmed and encouraged as I read this. I also found myself considering Block's (2008) assertion that a deep need of every human is to experience belonging, a sense of connection. I also found myself thinking of Cleveland's (2013) discussion of disunity and the challenges humans have in striving for unity.

For those interested in urban, culture, community, role of religion, and like to read case studies illustrating these principles - this is a fantastic volume!
