Brief, very well-written biographies of a host of men and women who can be termed 'living Gospels.' Devoid of the antiquated, stale, narrative form found in such compendiums as Butler's Lives of the Saints, these profiles engage the reader in the vibrancy of spiritual life, commitment and often heroism. I look forward to sharing them with our weekday Mass attendees.

Christian anti-Semitism had helped bring about the Holocaust, they declared, and so Christians must help make amends. Moreover, a stable and democratic Israel would no doubt make the Middle East a safer place for future American interests. Carenen argues that it was this mainline Protestant position that laid the foundation for the current evangelical Protestant support for Israel, which is based primarily on theological grounds.

Drawing on previously unexplored archival material from the Central Zionist Archives in Israel, this volume tells the full story of the American Christian-Israel relationship, bringing the various “players”—American liberal Protestants, American Evangelicals, American Jews, and Israelis—together into one historical narrative.

Rene C. Hoogland is Lecturer in Lesbian Studies/Comparative Literature at the University of Amsterdam. She has published articles on feminist/lesbian theory, postmodernism, women's and lesbian literature, and Hollywood cinema. She is now working on a book about sexual ambivalences in British and American cultural texts of the early 1960s.

Dr. Bulkeley speaks to our common humanity and how the human reality of dreaming is incorporated in the various streams of faith. A must read for anyone interested in dreams, world religious, or dialoging across cultures.

Fascinating Dreams in Religion

A very detailed guide to dreams in religion, including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, religions of Africa, and Native American religions. Fascinating examples! You learn a great deal about the religion as well as the dreams. What was most interesting to me was in learning about how Christianity has suppressed interest in dreams.

A few good thoughts but horrible book design

This is a quick read with a few good thoughts. Nothing terribly new here.

I marked this WAY down, however, because of the atrocious choice of typeface. If this book used a decent typeface, it would have taken 30 minutes. It actually took about 45 minutes because it was so hard to read.

For some reason, the book's designer chose a typeface with thin strokes and wide, nearly-circular letters. The letters are then crowded together, giving an overall effect of meaningless rows of circles. I found this an ironic design in a book about quality.

A modern fable about quality.

I read this book back in the 80s and it is still quite relevant today. It talks about a fictional company called Punctuation and how it lost market share to an up and coming company. The reason they lost market share was due to quality. How to reverse that trend is the nature of this story. Suffice to say many companies (and bosses) continue to fall into the same traps to regain their market share and profitablity.

This is a great and quick read about what quality should be. Since it is so brief and the language is so simple, most reading audiences can easily understand the topic and moral of the story. It would be a great book to hand out to production, service, and management personnel.

As it points out what to do and what not to do in the pursuit of quality and market share, the book illustrates the ups and downs of Punctuation, Inc., the mythical company founded by the inventor of punctuation. This thought-provoking and entertaining little book takes only an hour or two to read, but the author intends for its message to stick with you for a lifetime. Rich Discourse Intersection of Religion, Urban, and Social Change

This book documents a process designed to learn about religion in urban America and the outcomes from a multi-year study. The edited volume contains descriptions of organizations, congregations, and neighborhoods who graciously agreed to 'be studied.' The rich discourse afforded through the case studies, the conference on Religion and Community in Restructuring a Metropolis and the five Neighborhood Forums on Religion in Chicago provide a wonderful basis from which to consider religion in urban contexts. The editor Livezey noted, "we have witnessed a complex interaction among religion, urban structure, and social change" (p. 6). Urban areas, Chicago is but one, faced postindustrial growth and its challenges including: "economic polarization, spatial dislocations, and the lack of public authority" (p. 7). Further Livezey goes on to describe urban changes in latter part of the 20th century including what he termed the "refocus of moral culture" (p. 16) and the effects of this refocus on religion and the church. Ten narratives are provided for varying congregations and descriptions of how those congregations responded to urban change. Some findings:
1. "Churches, temples, synagogues, and mosques produce the cultural material that enables their members. . . to locate themselves with respect to the places and time in which they currently live, to identify with others, to find their moral bearings, and to achieve some measure of efficacy..." (p. 21)
2. Congregations' "cultural innovation is in part theological" (p. 22).
3. Congregations' "are engaged in cultural activities that have a prominent moral dimension" (p. 22).
4. Congregations "social accountability and the authority they attribute to their respective traditions contrast markedly with the individual moral autonomy sustained by the secular culture" (p. 23).

To read a book providing example after example of congregations positively striving to build community, create social cohesion, and social bonding in a day and age when the media is replete with examples of religious people focused on anything other than community is refreshing. I felt affirmed and encouraged as I read this. I also found myself considering Block's (2008) assertion that a deep need of every human is to experience belonging, a sense of connection. I also found myself thinking of Cleveland's (2013) discussion of disunity and the challenges humans have in striving for unity.

For those interested in urban, culture, community, role of religion, and like to read case studies illustrating these principles - this is a fantastic volume!

Cannot Tolerate Torrence

I just finished a two credit Epidemiology in Nursing Class that required an unbelievable amount of written work. I found Mosby's Understanding Epidemiology to be excessively wordy. It offers little more than an inchoate jumble of Epidemiological principles and concepts. This book is ill suited for those looking to learn the fundamentals of Epidemiology. I ended up taking out Barbara Valanis's Epidemiology in Health Care from the library, and working from that. Wish I hadn't shelled out the 35 bucks for this book.

Best for beginner.

I have just started to learn epidemiology. My teacher lent and reccommended this book. I think this book is suitable for taking conception of each topic in the field of epidemiology. It also provides examples for each topic, so it is helpful for understanding as the title says. I was shocked when I saw about comments on purchasing, it would take 4-6 weeks! It is sad to me. Anyway, I reccommend this book to beginner.

This is an extremely helpful volume for understanding clergy sexual misconduct on the offender's family, the church family, and other clergy (including the after-pastor). This book helps one recognize and identify congregational dynamics and has helpful suggestions of how to address such a situation.

When I first read this book, in the confusing time of having found out about undisclosed clergy sexual misconduct in my first parish, I finished it at 3 a.m. without stopping. The craziness of the congregation, the way that the bishop had covered up, the way that the evidence of the abuse was making itself known in parish interactions among people who hadn't even been there at the time, all of it, including me, my spouse, and the congregational members and even the abused were clearly "known" and understood by those who wrote this book. Without it, I might not have been able to lead the congregation through the time of disclosure and healing that was so necessary for them, and also for me as the pastor. Get it. It's not a book to stay in the library. It's a book to be used in any congregation where there was an intimation of clergy sexual misconduct even in what might seem to be in the far distant past.
