Fascinating insight into how trials can go wrong despite best intentions

Daniel Medwed has written an absorbing and lively and informative book which shows the reader how the innocent can be wrongly accused because of frequent conflicting missions on the part of prosecutors both to serve justice and to serve the state. Medwed uses numerous examples to illustrate his arguments, including the notorious Duke University case. These are important and eye-opening issues that anybody concerned with the criminal justice system needs to know about.

Every player in the criminal justice system should read this book

Dan Medwed has written a reader-friendly and compelling book that identifies the many ways that prosecutorial misconduct leads to convictions of the innocent as well as the reversals of convictions of the guilty. This book provides common sense solutions that can only improve the integrity of American jurisprudence. It should be required reading for every player in the criminal justice system, including judges, prosecutors and defense lawyers. And it should be required reading for every law student who aspires to practice criminal law. The book is an excellent source for members of the general public who are interested in learning how misconduct occurs, why it occurs, the consequences of it and how it can be stopped. For every person wrongfully convicted, the real criminal gets away--often to commit more and worse crimes.

Cannot Praise it Highly Enough

Medwed addresses the causes of wrongful convictions of innocent people, summarizes various suggestions to remedy the system, analyzes the pros and cons of these ideas, and offers his own suggestions.
And he knows this topic intimately. Medwed is a lawyer who assisted the wrongly convicted, now is a law professor, but other than his knowledge and his information, the book reads like a fireside chat. The tone and the phrasing, the metaphors, turn what might otherwise be described as a legal text (with possibly a hundred or more references in end notes) into something readily understood by anyone.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to better understand the system, from arrest to appeals, and why it does not work. Definitely read this if you are among those who want to improve the system. (That should be everyone since this could happen to you or someone about whom you care.)
