Wil Derkse is married and a father of two adult daughters. He is an oblate with the Benedictine St. Willibrord's Abbey in Doetinchem, The Netherlands. He has degrees in chemistry and philosophy and has taught at several institutions of secondary and higher education. Since 2001 he is a director responsible for the Soeterbeeck Program for Science, Society, and Worldviews at the Radboud University of Nijmegen, where he also holds the Andreas van Melsen Chair.

The Rule of Benedict for Beginners: Spirituality for Daily Life

If you ever wonder how to translate Benedictine spirituality into daily lay life, this book provides great practical suggestions. One of the major focuses of this book is one's ability to listen. In fact, as Derkse states, the first sentence of St Benedict's Rule starts with "Listen, my son". Most of us in the 21st century get very nervous when called to listen. But St Benedict is not calling for a subversive form of listening, rather he draws our attention to the virtues of attentive listening, the form of listening a physician uses when listening to a patient's heart, very attentive minimizing the risk of missing even the subtlest of sounds. Listening for St Benedict of course has a purpose, expressed in the Rule's very last word pervenies, as Derkse explains to arrive where we want to be. While listening is important for everyone, Derkse devotes special attention to how those in leadership roles should listen carefully, in order to stimulate those they work with to optimize their ability to grow. This is a radically different way of looking at leadership than one usually reads about and exemplifies how fundamentally different Christian leaders are called to be.
It is very fortunate that this book originally written in Dutch was translated into English, allowing many more readers to be inspired by Will Derkse's insights and interpretation of the Rule of St Benedict for lay people.

Testing the Water First: Benedict for Beginners

If your on a spiritual quest, this book could be a God-send. It touches on the BASIC principles of the rule of St.Benedict. "That everything we do in life offers a chance to sing God's praises" is Benedictine spiritually in a nutshell. In the Benedictine attitude there are no nonreligious domains. There are no unholy and holy places, there are no unholy and holy times and activities. EVERYTHING needs to be regarded as holy, EVERYTHING is an object for sanctification. Whether were mopping the floor or cleaning the altar linens in church, we should approach things in the same manner - what a beautiful concept. The thing that attracts me most about Benedictine spiritually is that it is not mysterious, esoteric or unachieveable. It relates entirely with "living in this world"!
If this appeals to you - living like a monk in the real world - this book will serve as a place to "test the waters" before diving in(only 88 pages)and pursuing it more in depth.

This is a brief, well written and organized book on the application of the Rule of Benedict to everyday life and work. It is a perfect book for "beginners," by which it is meant serious practicing religious and spiritual laypersons that "begin" at each moment, here and now and, practice attending to every activity with the same degree of gratitude and devotion. This is a book that can and must be read more than once and has applications for individual practice as well as group study. I recommend it highly to helping professionals.

In The Freudian Mystique, analyst Samuel Slipp offers an explanation of how such a remarkable and revolutionary thinker could achieve only inadequate theories of female development. Tracing the gradual evolution of patriarchy and phallocentrism in Western society, Slipp examines the stereotyped attitudes toward women that were taken for granted in Freud's culture and strongly influenced his thinking on feminine psychology. Of even greater importance was Freud's relationship with his mother, who emotionally abandoned him when he was two years old. Slipp brings the tools of a trained clinician into play as he examines, from an object relations perspective, Freud's own pre-oedipal conflicts, and shows how they influenced Freud's personality as well as the male-centric shape of his theory.

Mostly hits the nail on the head

Patriarchal power has been normalized to date, and not critiqued by the important figures of Western intellectual culture. Slipp attempts to correct this state of affairs in the light of Freud's system of psychology.

Samuel Slipp holds that it was because Freud had abandonment issues with his mother, which prevented him from viewing his relationship with his mother in a logical, correct and consistent way, that Freud made no useful analysis of "feminine psychology". Due to his unstable connection with his mother, he was unable to make any inroads into her consciousness to understand much about it. Perhaps "human psychology as it pertains to women" would have been a better term, as I am doubtful that a qualitatively different "feminine psychology" actually exists.

In any case, from a young age Freud's psyche was split between seeing his mother in a wholly positive and wholly negative light. He would have had to understand his own psychology in relation to his mother to make sense of hers, but the "light" kept changing on him, due to early developmental issues.

It is my considered view that one must necessarily accept the de facto nature of patriarchal power to come up with a term, "feminine psychology". If women experience the world in ways significantly different from men, this would be a practical outcome of patriarchal power dynamics. So Slipp's views could be complemented by sociological studies, so as to avoid falling into a trap of positing metaphysical postulates. For instance, patriarchal intellectuals have traditionally held that women are necessarily "passive". This was true in the case of Freud's expectations and suppositions. The problem is that if one has accepts this, one will not be able to turn up any evidence to the contrary, no matter how widely one may look. It is of vital importance, therefore, to differentiate metaphysics (with its religious basis) from genuine science, which is always alert to measuring the changing world "out there".

Slipp's writing is brilliant for indicating how a certain degree of pathology -- including Freud's own, as signified by a lack of knowledge of "the psychology of the feminine" -- has become normalized. Patriarchal dynamics, insofar as they exert a negative and pathological effect on those who come under them, have not at all been understood. That is a further extrapolation one might be able to take from his book. Feminists and sociologists, however, are well aware of the negative outcomes of power as suppression, whilst psychologists and psychoanalysts, in my experience, lag behind.

Still one of the finest commentaries on the Catechism

Among the various introductions, companions, and aids to studying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, there have been few substantial commentaries. This is one. The back cover describes this as the "first major study" of the Catechism. I am not aware of another commentary of this depth and substance since then.
This is not an introduction for the beginner, but a scholarly commentary for a serious student of the Catechism. The book consists of a collection of 25 essays, each addressing a section of the catechism, and each by an author with expertise in that area. At 512 pages, this book delves deeply and critically into the contents of the Catechism.
Shortcomings? I discovered a certain uneveness in this commentary. With 25 authors, I suppose this is to be expected. For example, the essay on the Holy Spirit describes the contents in detail, comments on each subsection, discusses the sources, and identifies strengths and weaknesses. Meanwhile, the essay entitled "More than Law and Precept: Commandments 1-3" provides an assessment of the overall theological approach of that section of the catechism, but gives little attention to particulars - to the extent that it does not even address the 3rd commandment. Each essay is useful in its own way. But I think this overall uneveness is a weakness.
Nonetheless, for anyone seeking a substantial commentary on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, this is one.
