Need to know topics addressed.

Too few schools address the ethics and business management practices of private veterinary medicine. I was lucky to have a crash 6wk course just before clinical year started and this was a book recommended to read. Lo, I find this book again and again, in libraries throughout the hospital services, with different parts looked through and highlighted... as if our clinical doctors page through it when they can and highlight the things that stand out...

Get your markers ready, some profound statements are made, and while this isn't a cover to cover, begging for more kinda book, it makes you think and definitely cements or knocks down long held convictions.

For me, this book spells out some things that I felt, but was unable to articulate.

Best Ramayana translation.

This is by far the best translation I have read of the ancient epic Ramayana. It is not a retelling. The sanskrit epic is originally a poem and this translation is very beautifully written. I love it and it has enhanced my appreciation of this remarkable epic. Thank you.

This bilingual incomplete Ramayana translation a world class literary gem

Five volumes of a projected seven volume complete Ramayana translation by various translators for the different volumes,it has romanized Sanskrit on the left hand page facing the English translation on the right hand page. It has remained incomplete, missing the last two volumes due to the bankruptcy of the Clay Sanskrit Library. Still what we have in the five volumes is a world class literary gem. Valmiki's story can be seen completed in a number of English-only translations which get to the end in one volume by sticking to the main story line, leaving out peripheral plots along the way. Of all the one volume translations which get to the end of the story, the one that stands out the most in contrast to the painstaking prosaic Clay Sanskrit Library approach is the Everyman Library edition of The Ramayana and The Mahabharata both condensed into English verse in rhymed couplets by Romesh C. Dutt.

Loved learning about Augustine and his teaching! Harmless writes a well thought out book that keeps you reading! I had to read this for a class in seminary and the professor told us to "skim" major parts of the assigned reading but I read it all !

William Harmless Augustine and the Catechumenate (Collegeville, MN: The Liturgical Press, 1995). 406 pages with charts, index and bibliography. $34.95.

St. Augustine: priest, bishop, theologian, doctor of the church, polemicist, apolo-gist, scholar-and catechist. Augustine is respected and loved by the Christian church for his many roles, but his role as a catechist has been the least well known, until now. Wil-liam Harmless has provided us with a magnificent portrait of Augustine the catechist.
Harmless wrote this book to assist the Roman Catholic Church's Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA was launched in 1972 by the Vatican thus "reversing a thousand years of initiatory practice and attitude" (p. 1). Harmless' operating assumption is that "if the Church has found itself increasingly renewed by the wisdom and richness of these ancient rituals and their underlying pastoral vision, then the Church might find itself similarly renewed by our gleaning the best from ancient styles of catechesis" (p. 25). The RCIA has been used with great effectiveness in many Roman Catholic parishes. It is basically an adoption of the early church's classic catechumenate process, as that process reached a high point in the fourth century.
Harmless sets out to investigate one example of the ancient catechumenate: the catechumenate of St. Augustine of Hippo. The reason for this is simple. Augustine wrote a number of treatises on the subject of catechesis and the catechumenate; he is the only pa-tristic author from whom we have samples of each of the four stages of the ancient catechumenate; there are excellent critical editions of Augustine's works, both in the origi-nal language and in English; and finally, Harmless notes that within the past sixty years there have been many archeological and textual discoveries that offer much detailed infor-mation about Augustine and his Church in Hippo.
Harmless organizes his book in a clear and orderly fashion, something that can not always be said of scholars' books. In addition to the book's excellent organization, Harm-less' writing style is very engaging. This book was a delight to read. This reviewer found it hard to put down, so interesting is Harmless' narrative descriptions of Augustine as preacher, catechist, exegete, pastor and church leader. Throughout the book Harmless of-fers direct quotes from Augustine's sermons, a major source of our knowledge of Augustine's catechetical method and content. His translation of Augustine's sermons is vivid, as was Augustine in the original. Harmless recounts how the congregation in Augustine's day was often swept up by the Bishop's masterful rhetoric, applauding, weeping, cheering or shouting out Bible verses as Augustine preached.
Harmless' book will both complement and supplement other treatments of Augustine in English. Definitive studies include Van der Meer's Augustine the Bishop; Brown's Augustine of Hippo and Bonner's St. Augustine of Hippo . For the best, and most complete, translation of Augustine's sermons into English we have The Works of Saint Augustine (New City Press, 1995). In this collection of Augustine's sermons, translator Edmund Hill has captured the vividness of Augustine's oratory and relies on the best manuscripts available, and includes copius notes. Eventually, the project hopes to make available, for the first time, Augustine's complete writings in English. Those who know Augustine only through the Victorian English of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers collection will be delighted by the New City Press edition of Augustine's works.
Harmless traces Augustine's own catechetical experience under Ambrose of Milan and then takes a look at how Augustine approached each phrase of the classic catechumenate model: evangelization, catechumenate, candidate for Baptism (Lenten catechesis), and then post-Baptismal catechesis. In each section, Harmless masterfully il-lustrates how Augustine pulled out all the stops in his efforts to reach each catechumen. He especially focuses on Augustine the master orator, indicating how Augustine both used and ignored the classic rules of rhetoric in his catechetical work. For Augustine, reaching both the head and the heart was the goal, neither whipping up hearers into mindless emotional frenzy nor boring them to death with encyclopedic lectures on theological facts.
Harmless does not gloss over the challenges faced by Augustine, or paint this as some sort of utopian era for the church. He makes it clear that Augustine grew frustrated with his congregations. Writing about the catechetical task, Augustine once rehearsed the catechumen's vices: "Those depraved persons who in mobs fill the churches in a bodily sense only: . . . drunkards, covetous, extortioners, gamblers, adulterers, fornicators, lov-ers of shows, wearers of idolatrous charms, soothsayers, astrologers, or diviners employ-ing vain and unholy arts" (p. 133). This was not a "pure church" - as if there ever was such a thing. Since we are not Donatists, we should not try to locate perfection in this fallen order either, or else we will become either self-righteous hypocrites or despairing pessi-mists. Harmless' shows us how one Christian theologian and teacher struggled with the all too human qualities of his congregation and continued to strive for uncompromising excel-lence in service of the Gospel.
William Harmless has provided a true gem to the Christian church. He offers a very organized description of Augustine's catechetical work, in the process helping us to under-stand even more this great doctor of the church and how his genius for rhetoric was com-bined with his passion for teaching the Faith. Augustine would be pleased not only with what Harmless has to say, but how he has said it, and so will Harmless' readers.

Was dreading reading it and approached it as a pending dull read. However

Required book for seminary. Was dreading reading it and approached it as a pending dull read. However, I was surprised to find it very interesting. Seeing how Augustine used cathechesis was an attention grabber for me. I found myself enjoying it page after page. Now, please understand it is not an easy sit down and be entertained type of read for the average person. But it was enjoyable.

Meredith Gould, PhD, is a digital strategist with well over a decade of hands-on experience with communications at all levels of church across denominations. She's the author of eight books about faith and everyday life. Her book The Word Made Fresh: Communicating Church and Faith Today (Morehouse) helped establish church communication as a vital ministry. Dr. Gould is the founder and lead moderator of the weekly ecumenical Twitter-based chat about church social media (#chsocm), serves on the External Advisory Board for the Mayo Clinic Center for Social Media, and is nationally known for her passionate advocacy of using these tools wisely and well for ministry. Insightful, energizing, and permission-giving

Three things stand out for me:

1) She invites us to think generationally. Different generations have different ways of seeing the world, understanding themselves (and God), and different ways of communicating. Because social media isn't just for "the kids" anymore, it's become an intergenerational tool for communication and connection. But, social media isn't one-size-fits-all. Older generations gravitate to social media that is more "wordy" and younger generations gravitate to those that are more image based. (Think about it, who's sending you all those angry-cat-meme's??) Instead of pushing churches to choose, she invites us to see the totality of our audience, and connect with that totality--while being mindful of who we're communicating with and how we're communicating.

2) She invites up to think about personality types. Honestly, this was the most enlightening part of the book for me. We're probably all familiar with the Myers-Briggs personality types--and you may even know your own type. Gould, quite astutely notes that it's the extraverts who tend to "worry" about social media replacing "real" communication, and it's the introverts among us who experience social media as a breath of fresh air, where they are able to connect with others without draining their energy levels. In church, the coffee-hour is the natural habitat for the extravert. (My vision of purgatory is an endless coffee hour. Good Lord, deliver me.) But, churches could use social media as a tool for introverts to connect socially, theologically, and spiritually. The possibilities there are exciting.

3) She insists that virtual community is, in fact, "real" community. I've experienced this to be true, but I don't think I've ever had the courage to swim against the mainstream naysayers mantra that "social media isn't real." And, if community can spring up there, then we as people with Good News have the joy and privilege to bring that Good News there. And listen to the angst, worry, skepticism, and fears of the world right there in the midst of community. I found this part of the book so liberating, and permission-giving.

Indispensible guidebook for Jesus-followers and church leaders

Some may know Meredith Gould as the person behind the #chsocm Twitter hashtag, for discussing all things church/social media. So Dr Gould knows her stuff! She is an established author, sociologist and social media consultant, with digital experience going back to the beginnings of the Web. But this is not an academic book - it's highly readable, laced with whimsical humor - and provides a valuable introduction to any church leader or member who is considering whether, or how, to start out or develop their social media strategy.

Gould assumes readers have no previous knowledge or experience of social media, and leads us through an explanation of social media and digital community, with learning styles and theological issues thrown in. We are shown how to choose social media options, make them work effectively and integrate them into existing church ministry.

But this is not just a book for social media newbies - even churches and Christians with considerable social media experience will find vital new insights and ideas here. The 'Thought Bytes' questions at the end of each chapter provide an excellent framework for a church leadership or communications team to crystallize thinking, ideas and strategies.

Of course, as with any book, Meredith may not cover every possible aspect of the topic - that's why we always need to read around the insights of a number of authors! I highly recommend it for any church or individual Jesus-follower wanting to be more effective online for the Kingdom.

Great Resource!

As a Millennial soon-to-be pastor, I was thrilled when I found out I had won a copy of this book. The book is written in a clear, easy-to-read format. Gould even incorporates humor which makes reading go by quickly and takes some of the anxiety away from congregations that may be a little hesitant to dive into the waters of social media.

Although I would consider myself quite proficient with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, WordPress, etc.), Gould helped me to understand better how each platform could be used in a congregational setting. Her questions and tips for things to think about as you explore social media in your congregation made me stop and think. This little book was a quick read, but it is something that begs to be read through multiple times and kept on a reference shelf where it is easily accessible.

After reading this book, I am more convinced of the need for social media in a congregational setting, as well as for designated social media people in the church. And I can't wait to put it to good use!
