Examining attitudes toward masturbation, homosexuality, violence against women, feminism, free love, and the emerging dating system, The First Sexual Revolution shows how American men in the Jazz Age were subjected to a barrage of information and advice about their sexuality that stressed not character but personality and sex appeal. Repression was out; sexual expression—performance—was in.

This New Man was more egalitarian and more sexual than the Victorian patriarch. But the diffusion to the middle class of the Victorian underworld ethos of primitivism and violence against women, and the flight from commitment to relationships, heralded instability and tensions that continues to define American sexual relations. To illustrate this point, Dr. White takes a close look—through letters and diaries—at the successes and failures of nine marriages involving actively feminist women, demonstrating the pressures that this revolution in values caused. Dr. White concludes that the return to primitivism characterized by the men's movement marks the most recent aftershock of the revolution that has shaped us all.

In Courting Change, Kimberly D. Richman zeros in on the nebulous realm of family law, one of the most indeterminate and discretionary areas of American law. She focuses on judicial decisions—both the outcomes and the rationales—and what they say about family, rights, sexual orientation, and who qualifies as a parent. Richman challenges prevailing notions that gay and lesbian parents and families are hurt by laws’ indeterminacy, arguing that, because family law is so loosely defined, it allows for the flexibility needed to respond to—and even facilitate — changes in how we conceive of family, parenting, and the role of sexual orientation in family law.

About the Author
Marie-Theres Wacker is professor of Old Testament and women's research at the Faculty of Catholic Theology, University of Muenster, Germany. She is director of the Seminar for Old Testament Exegesis and runs a research unit for gender studies in theology. Her fields of teaching, research, and publication include feminist biblical hermeneutics, biblical monotheism, early Jewish writings from Hellenistic times, and reception history of the Bible. Together with Luise Schottroff, she edited Feminist Biblical Interpretation: A Compendium, a feminist commentary on the Christian Bible and selected noncanonical writings.

Excellent resource for the new ICU nurse!!!

I have been a fan of Sylvia Price's Pathophysiology text since I first studied for the CCRN exam in 1982. I have bought periodic updated versions since that time and recommend it to all my preceptees and CCRN study group members. The clarity of her authors' explanations makes understanding the pathophysiology of conditions commonly seen in ICU very easy. I do not have enough words to express how highly I recommend this book to any nurse beginning a critical care career.

Everything you always wanted to know about pathophys........

I have the first edition of Dr. Lorraine Wilson's pathophys. text and have just bought the fifth edition. It is an excellent resource for any nurse who wants to maintain a current knowledge base in pathophysiology. It is a great resource. It is obvious that the main editor, Dr. Wilson, takes great pride in the accuracy of the submissions and strives to produce a high quality text book. I understand that Dr. Wilson is completing the 6th edition but no word as to when it will be released.

Excellent RCIA tool

The Cultural World of Jesus is written as three books. Each book is based on the Catholic Latin Rite lectionary, with each book representing one year of Catholic teaching on the Gospels. These books contain essays on the gospel for each week, which puts everything in the perspective of the mediterranean culture. These books are very good for Catholics who wish to have a deeper understanding of the Gospels, and wish to have some reading material to help their weekly Scripture study. It is also an excellent resource for RCIA team members or potential converts, to gain a good insight into the Jesus' culture and consequently the direction of His teachings. I do not know how useful these books would be for someone who was not a Catholic however. The A,B, and C Cycle system is not a straight run-through of the Gospels, as each week in the Liturgical calendar has a specific and special meaning and consequently the Gospel story for that week corresponds. However, just for the cultural reflection itself these books are worth what you pay. In addition, John Pilch has a very light style of writing, and does not get caught up in theological jargon. Each week is represented by a two to four page essay, making scripture study very easy and enlightening.

Each reading offers a glimpse into the culture of the time of Jesus and makes the reading make sense to us. For example, it totally explained the salt being thrown underfoot--something that we don't really understand, but people in Jesus' time took for granted. Two little pages each week offer insight into the Gospel of the Sunday and make it make more sense. I find it very helpful.

John N. Clayton claims: "Many of the questions that people have about the integrity of the Bible are rooted in a failure to understand the culture that is responsible for bringing us the Bible. It is important to understand that the Bible is not an American book, written in English, and steeped in our vocabulary and culture." As Pilch puts it, "Contemporary events in the Middle East have made all of us aware of how very different Middle Eastern culture is from our Western culture. The Bible, which is a product of that same culture, is similarly very different from what we usually read in the West. If we have not been reading the Bible as a Middle Eastern document, the likelihood is that we have been misreading and misinterpreting it."

The Catholic Lectionary (liturgical Scripture readings) is divided into Years A, B, and C. This volume is part of a series of nine, thus giving three volumes for the Sundays of each of the three liturgical years. (Deviations from the Common Lectionary are relatively few.) Scripture citations are based on the New Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition.

Pilch has performed a magnificent service to biblical studies through his insights into first-century Eastern Mediterranean culture. In addition he very helpfully adds down-to-earth suggestions for "a cross-cultural comparison with contemporary western culture." His avoidance of arcane jargon is a great boon and encouragement to the general reader.

While scholarship in this area has been rapidly developing, at the present time Pilch's work is the gold standard for those who would be intimidated by scholarly journals.
