Excellent! A well researched and easily read book that includes the latest research and a new approach. The gospel is seen as a Book on Jesus and the first century church. Excellent Contribution

The ambiguous dance between grace and free-will lost a step with the recent passing of Stephen Duffy's life. His book, The Dynamics of Grace: Perspectives in Theological Anthropology, is a most stimulating perspective on the partnership of grace with free-will. As a former student of Duffy's at Loyola of New Orleans, I could clearly see his knowing wit and smile percolate through words of angst in describing God's revelation. This book is a gift to all serious theologians.

For Duffy, revelation is more than an arbitrary Bartian thunderbolt that crashes through reality and also more than a Neo-Platonic reflection of past experiences. Likewise, the dynamic between grace and free will describes a moving relationship beyond an understanding of one versus the other. It is dynamic.

Duffy's book brings readers face-to-face with the contributions and discrepancies of systematic theologians who embrace the study of grace with a passion and love which shall endure the bonds of this life.

Very nice rendering of he Book of Psalms.

This makes a wonderful psalter and the inclusive language puts forth a stately figuring of the psalms. Would be nice to include a chart of the best psalms to pray during the liturgical seasons and those suitable for Morning and Evening prayers. The Morning and Evening Canticles added would make this book a more superb prayerbook.

Psalter for the Christian People

For those wary of inclusive-language Biblical translations which might be too extreme, this psalter presents a modest but appreciable freshening of patriarchal language. Very close to the Book of Common Prayer (Episcopal Church, 1979) psalter, it is especially useful for worshiping communities in that denomination but could be used in public or private prayer in any church (or synagogue--the book's title is unnecesarily limiting; there are no direct Christological references in the book itself). The concise introduction (2 pages!) explains in ten clear points the criteria for the language selected and includes examples. A bonus is a short essay, also with examples, on singing the psalter. The handsome design by noted liturgical artist, Frank Kacmarcik, Obl.S.B., makes the paperbound volume worthy of use in places of public worship.

A Well-Developed Argument for A Pauline Authorized Collection of Letters

In the first part of this book the author provides a comprehensive survey of academic thought concerning the composition of Paul's letters including the use of secretaries and collaborators, the parts of a typical letter, and the forms/types of letters in Paul's day. He defends or refutes some of the positions discussed providing examples from letters and NT documents of the period. This section provides little room (110 pages of text) for detailed analysis leaving some issues for others to address. Consequently his detailed arguments focus primarily on issues that support the premise found in the second and final section of the book. The final section of the book supports the premise that Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, and Galatians were prepared for distribution by the Apostle Paul and his secretary as a single literary unit, an authorized collection of his letters with a single purpose and theme. There are many proofs and conjectures provided to support this position. His work deserves consideration and evaluation by others in this field of study.

A fine introduction to ancient letter writing

Murphy-O'Connor has rendered a significant service to the study of New Testament, and especially Pauline, epistles. With chapters on the process of and materials for writing, and on the main consistent parts of ancient letters, we are given a survey from non-biblical to biblical epistles that is an important contribution to the whole field. Especially interesting is the author's account of the use of secretaries and the preservation of letters in the first century.

The translator offers his own ideas in his translation

My reviews of the two volumes Targum Neofiti 1: Genesis and Targum Pseudo-Jonathan: Genesis offers details about this 19 volume series presenting an English translation of the Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible. This is half of the fifth volume, 5B, which translates Pseudo-Jonathan.

As seen in the previous reviews, the Pseudo-Jonathan translator used his translations to read ideas into the biblical text that a plain reading does not disclose. The following are some examples.

* He expands the Ten Commandments in chapter 5 to explain them.
* Chapter 6 contains the legend that when the patriarch Jacob, also called Israel, was dying he feared that there might be "a defect among his sons. He called them and asked them: `Is there any guile in your hearts?' All of them replied as one and said to him: `Hear, Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.'" The original does not suggest that "Israel" is Jacob, but the entire Israelite people.
* In 7:10, the translator adds a concept that is not explicit in the Torah. If the people do good works, they will have life in the world to come. He also says that wicked people will be paid for their good deeds while they are alive, but will not have the world to come. This seems to explain why good things happen to bad people.
* Although not revealed in the Bible, the translator gives us Moses' date of birth and date of death in the final chapter of Deuteronomy along with an extensive eulogy.
