finally translated

I hope the translation of Schulze's general work on the modern history of Islam will lead to the translation of some of his works, especially on Pan-Islamism. This book has its weaknesses throughout due to the very nature of the enterprise. It's all too easy to point out what such attempts to give comprehensive histories lack. Nonetheless, out of all the books out there, I recommend Schulze's book more than any other because it avoids sensationalism and the essentialization of Islamic history. Moreoever, it presents Islamic history in th idiom of political modenrity rather than in mediaeval throwbacks that are not sufficient for explaining polyvalent nature of modern Islamic history. The translation, however, was poorly edited even after coming out in paperback, which is a shame. Overall, this doesn't detract from the overall quality of the work.

History's lessons

I am not quite sure what to make of this book, but here goes. It is a historically rich narrative of the Islamic world over the past century, it is an objective and successful attempt at finding out how the Islamic world has changed and why and its relation to the rest of the world and other cultures. I should warn you, though, that it is not a light read and you may find yourself going back a couple of pages to re-orient yourself.
There is a special focus on the different political theories and ideologies and their influence on Muslims as they came into contact with them as a result of integration with the rest of the world, especially after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. It seems to be a fitting addition to the resource materials required for any serious political science/history class and it is a very deep analysis (he is a scholar). A very educating work.

Excellent History

This very good history of Islamic world of the last 100 years. The unlike most histories of the Islamic world, the author avoids Orientalism and as result is able to tell a coherent and compelling story. The book provides a historical supplement to Sayyid's A Fundamental Fear. I would recommend reading both of these together. Where Fundamenatal Fear provides a theoritical analysis, this book provides a historically rich description.

Among legendary American Catholic churchmen -- men such as Cardinals James Gibbons of Baltimore and John J. Wright, an American in Rome -- few were instant legends in the style of Chicago's admired Joseph Bernardin. Pope John Paul II appointed him to succeed John Cardinal Cody as archbishop of Chicago. He was installed August 25, 1982. The pope announced Bernardin's elevation to cardinal on January 5, 1983. Father Spilly, editor of the two volumes, worked closely with Bernardin for several years before the cardinal's death in 1996. He has selected well and organized the material in a useful format. His task was to sift a paper mountain. Spilly writes that the Chicago archdiocesan archives include more than 450 of Bernardin's major addresses, some 1,600 homilies, more than 600 texts of shorter remarks, along with invocations and 14 years of weekly newspaper columns. Bernardin had a flair for intensifying common images to make an effective point. In urging the defense of life for the unborn and for the condemned on death row, he saw the answer as a "seamless garment." It may have been a borrowed phrase, but he enlivened it with new drama. When I started to write his first biography, "The Spirit of Cardinal Bernardin," Bernardin gave me boxes of sermons, speeches and declarations. Those documents multiplied in later years into a virtual library of Catholic teaching by a master teacher. I was with him when he gave some of the addresses in these handsome volumes, as when he took possession of his titular church in Rome. These volumes are not intended to detail all of Bernardin's equally impressive writings and addresses in his early years. He had much to say as general secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and later as its president, and as the archbishop of Cincinnati. In an absorbing foreword to the two-volume set, Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles points to the value of Bernardin's words in discerning the presence of the living Christ. There's plenty of material here for strengthening personal spirituality and understanding Bernardin's sense of Church as Christ present in the world.

Bajtelsmit, a finance professor at Colorado State University, takes an easygoing and simple approach in this guide aimed at those seeking to take charge of their money. Too many women, says the author, delegate the responsibility of handling their assets to their husbands or fathers because they're so busy with other tasks that learning about finance is too daunting. However, Bajtelsmit insists that women must learn the basics of money management, organize their records and set clear goals. For women who have never paid much attention to their finances, some of her strategies are helpful knowing which records to keep and which papers to toss, how to read the fine print on health and life insurance policies and how to evaluate employer benefits. The investing chapter offers easy-to-understand explanations of the different risk levels for various investing vehicles, from individual stocks to mutual funds, and the appendix records useful Web sites, particularly government resources. Some may be irritated by the author's repeated use of broad generalizations and stereotypes: "I am a `list person,' and I find that this seems to be a female trait (or maybe it is a trait of busy people)" and "If you are like most women, estate planning is a subject that you haven't thought much about before and would rather not think about." No one male or female likes to think about estate planning! Bajtelsmit's book will be most valuable to those who are popular novices in money management. Great financial tips, easy to use

"The Busy Womans Guide to Financial Freedom" has really helped me get our financial planning on track. It has helped me improve the organization of my financial records as well as be realistic about how much life insurance we need. I found the college planning chapter helpful for making savings decisions for our new baby.
I especially liked the chapter where she compares budgeting to dieting. It was a humorous way of helping me find those extra dollars I need to reach our financial goals.
It's easy to follow and you won't be disappointed.

I am favorably impressed by The Busy Women's Guide to Financial Freedom by Vickie L. Bajtelsmit. It is written in plain language with practical examples. For future editions, the book's title should be changed, however, because it is gender-neutral--a guide for men as well.

Panchatantra

It's wonderful to have a professionally done translation of this influential work, handy for the Sanskritists among us to have the original text on facing pages and tempting for those of us who are not Sanskritists to see that text transliterated in Roman characters - tempting because one repeatedly wants to peek and pick up cognates and try to puzzle out the original language.

The translation in the present case suffers somewhat from over-cautious literalism, as if it were a school exercise. That has the effect of blunting the wit of the original and making the many verse passages embedded in the narratives come out a bit flat footed. One needn't resort to anachronism to keep the zing in a text of this kind.

The notes, however, are helpful, if occasionally a bit overly philological. It's one thing to provide context or background (and this is always useful), but another to assume that any allusion to myth, ritual, or custom situates a remark within that frame, rather than, say, commenting on it.

The Case Series was welcomed with delight in the pages of TLS and I eagerly ordered this volume, which is very relevant to work of my own, on The Case of the Animals vs Man before the King of the Jinn (Oxford University Press, 2010), a 10th century Arabic ecological fable by the Sincere Brethren of Basra (Ikhwan al-Safa) that was influenced by the irreverent tone and many touches of this text, which the Ikhwan knew in an Arabic version of a Persian adaptation. The Case series was to be a Sanskrit counterpart to the Loeb Classical Library. But rumor from good sources now has it that the sponsorship has ended. That's regrettable!

India is more than mystical
By travel light and smiling
These are stories which belong on the shelf with other classic Asiatica. The introduction explains how they came to be, and that is a great story in and of itself. I won't spoil it by talking about it. The stories evoke 1001 Nights and Aesop. I bought this at the same time I bought the Arthrasashtra. The two works show a highly pragmatic and lively India.

        In The Way of Discipleship, theologian Anthony Gittins describes the eternal mission of the Trinity, historically brought "down to earth" in the ministry of Jesus, and then continued to the ends of the earth by those called and sent as disciples throughout future generations. Gittins explains that Christian discipleship must be the living out of Jesus' own example in many different times and places. He encourages people of all ages to follow the invitation of Jesus to be missionary disciples.
        The Way of Discipleship explores several New Testament examples of Jesus' call and commissioning, distills the principles involved, and then recontextualizes the stories so that they pose a direct challenge to disciples today. Anthony J. Gittins, CSSp, taught theology and anthropology at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago from 1984 until 2011 and is now emeritus professor of theology and culture. He continues to do consultancy work and offer workshops, seminars, short courses, and retreats in more than thirty-five countries from Africa to the Pacific. He is the author of fifteen books on theological and anthropological topics, on mission, and on spirituality including Living Mission Interculturally: Faith, Culture, and the Renewal of Praxis, published by Liturgical Press.
