Fully aware that religion had to be controlled if the totalitarian state was to function, Soviet bureaucrats took the religious threat very seriously. The book illuminates the varying responses of these policymakers to the Russian Orthodox Church, the Old Believers, Catholics, Protestants, the Armenian Church, Jews, Muslims, and Buddhists as well as to newer groups like the Jehovah's Witnesses and the Hare Krishnas. Even as the Soviet empire crumbled around them in the early 1990s, Russian authorities still toiled away, gathering information and reports for the day when their services would again be required, all the while trying to manipulate what was left of their power, often with no greater ideological purpose than to retain the control to which they had become accustomed. I own the 1993 (second edition) and have found it to be invaluable in teaching beginning students about the nursing process. I especially like the inclusion of historical information, use of functional health patterns, and summary of the nursing process itself. The definition of each diagnosis and overview statements provide good background information. The case studies and care plans are excellent learning tools. References cited after each diagnosis provide additional resources and rationales.
The addition of NIC and NOC and evidence-based information in the new edition along with updated diagnoses would make this book a valuable addition to any nurse's reference library.

Not interesting or worth reading

This is not an academic book, it is not a popular or trade book. It is not politically correct or a book critical of political correctness. The author is a freelance journalist and broadcaster. What is it. I really don't know, except to say it isn't much good or very interesting and I don't recommend it. There are some halfway interesting bits in it but nothing that makes all of it worth reading.

A fresh new perspective of race and multiculturalism

Is pluralism the most progressive standpoint or does progressive pluralism hold only slightly less racism than conservatism? Malik challenges the decades-old notion that pluralism is the best option for minorities, which most of us have taken for granted since the 70's. I must say that his compelling arguments have had an enormous impact on my political views and changed my perspective on many issues.

My only issue with this book is that he goes into ridiculous amounts of mundane detail. If you have the patience to wade through those details, there are all kinds of interesting new perspectives to find.

Written with a breadth of knowledge, Malik doesn't disdain evidence taken from popular culture, but his work is replete with academic learning too. His thesis is challenging and well argued, and the book has the rare merit of proposing a view that sets the reader thinking on their own, and not just about race but all forms of socially constructed reality. First class.
