Well researched and thought provoking look at an important social issue

Corporate America has historically been a man's world. It has been a commonplace assumption that, as increasing numbers of women with the educational and professional skills needed to succeed in business began to climb the corporate ladder, women would inevitably assume their rightful share of high level positions in corporations. As this book demonstrates,this optimistic assumption has turned out to be untrue. Branson documents the continuing absence of women today in important positions in the corporate world, and then analyzes the reasons why this is still happening. He points both to legal rules and corporal cultural practices and policies that make it challenging for women to succeed at the highest level of corporate governance. In addition, he examines the social and cultural criteria that determine who will be seen as effective executives and who will not--criteria that make many women appear to be less qualified managers than they truly are. Branson suggests that changes in corporate culture and policies will be needed if American business is to successfully tap this underutilized talent pool. In a globalized world of increased competition, American business is ill-served by failing to maximize the contribution of this segment of the corporate work force.

Only five black men were admitted to the United States Naval Academy between Reconstruction and the beginning of World War II. None graduated, and all were deeply scarred by intense racial discrimination, ranging from brutal hazing incidents to the institutionalized racist policies of the Academy itself.

Breaking the Color Barrier examines the black community's efforts to integrate the Naval Academy, as well as the experiences that black midshipmen encountered at Annapolis. Historian Robert J. Schneller analyzes how the Academy responded to demands for integration from black and white civilians, civil rights activists, and politicians, as well as what life at the Academy was like for black midshipmen and the encounters they had with their white classmates.

In 1949, Midshipman Wesley Brown achieved what seemed to be the impossible: he became the first black graduate of the Academy. Armed with intelligence, social grace, athleticism, self-discipline, and an immutable pluck, as well as critical support from friends and family, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, and the Executive Department, Brown was able to confront and ultimately shatter the Academy’s tradition of systematic racial discrimination.

Based on the Navy’s documentary records and on personal interviews with scores of midshipmen and naval officers, Breaking the Color Barrier sheds light on the Academy’s first step in transforming itself from a racist institution to one that today ranks equal opportunity among its fundamental tenets.

About the Author

Robert J. Schneller Jr. is an official historian in the Contemporary History Branch of the U.S. Navy’s Naval Historical Center and holds a Ph.D. in military history from Duke University. He is an award-winning biographer and historian, and has published several books on American naval history, including Shield and Sword: The United States Navy and the Persian Gulf War, and A Quest for Glory: A Biography of Rear Admiral John A. Dahlgren. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Well Done Story of a Civil Rights Pioneer

The civil rights history of the United States has a number of people, such as Martin Luther King, that stand out as giants among men. While certainly important in the struggle for civil rights, the whole movement was as much dependent on an awful lot of lessor known, even unknown people: Charleen Hunter, the little girl going to school in Little Rock; Rosa Parks, the lady riding the bus in Montgomery.

This book brings another to the fore, Wesley Brown, the first African American to graduate from the United States Naval Academy. His is a story of undue harassment by southern students, and a strength that I don't think I would have had. It's a story worth telling and well told in this new book.

What the book doesn't mention is that after graduating Mr. Brown remained in the Navy until he retired in 1969 as Lt. Commander. To further honor Mr. Brown, the Navy is now intended to build the Wesley Brown Field House at the academy.

Must read if you want to know the true history of the Naval Academy.

I enjoyed this actual account for two (2) reasons. First: I always wanted to go to the Naval Academy. Second: I was denied sponsorship by my local Congressman due to racism. What the African American men endured to become Naval Officers to serve their country speak volume about their characters and less about those "WHO STOOD" in the way of their progress.

Sacramental Orders also focuses on the mutual reciprocity in the relationship between liturgical rite and the theology of the sacrament as explained in ecclesial documents. The ordination rites reflect the theology expressed by Vatican II and yet also present a theology of the sacrament embedded in the liturgical texts and actions.

She situates the letter in the historical context of slavery in the ancient world and shows how Paul combined his theology with contemporary rhetorical strategies to produce an effective challenge to his audience.

A critical reader of the history of marriage understands that it is an institution that has always been in flux. It is also a decidedly complicated one, existing simultaneously in the realms of religion, law, and emotion. And yet recent years have seen dramatic and heavily waged battles over the proposition of including same sex couples in marriage. Just what is at stake in these battles? License to Wed examines the meanings of marriage for couples in the two first states to extend that right to same sex couples: California and Massachusetts. The two states provide a compelling contrast: while in California the rights that go with marriage—inheritance, custody, and so forth—were already granted to couples under the state’s domestic partnership law, those in Massachusetts did not have this same set of rights. At the same time, Massachusetts has offered civil marriage consistently since 2004; Californians, on the other hand, have experienced a much more turbulent legal path. And yet, same-sex couples in both states seek to marry for a variety of interacting, overlapping, and evolving reasons that do not vary significantly by location. The evidence shows us that for many of these individuals, access to civil marriage in particular—not domestic partnership alone, no matter how broad—and not a commitment ceremony alone, no matter how emotional—is a home of such personal, civic, political, and instrumental resonance that it is ultimately difficult to disentangle the many meanings of marriage. This book attempts to do so, and in the process reveals just what is at stake for these couples, how access to a legal institution fundamentally alters their consciousness, and what the impact of legal inclusion is for those traditionally excluded.

An excellent read

Was hesitant about starting, but found that from the interviews, that most of the perspectives on marriage were essentially the same as my own ideas about our own marriage of 58 years. Was pleasantly surprised that several who had been deeply hurt by their religious marginalization were able to move beyond the damage caused. But this is not an excuse for us "good Christians" to continue the gay bashing.
