One point of departure is the poet's sense of the origins of his illness in his childhood and, particularly, in his mother's blind, narcissistic self- absorption and his father's emotional constriction and mental limitations. About the Author

David Kleinbard is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Queens College and the Graduate Center, CUNY. His published work ranges from psychological studies of D.H. Lawrence and Faulkner, to essays on contemporary German and American poetry, and original fiction.

For those who care to better know the inner world of a remarkably complex poet

Rilke was disapproved of by his failed military career father who wanted him to be a soldier. His mother did not provide a stable loving confirmation of his identity. She mourned an older sister who had died and who she in a way tried to make him a kind of replacement for. Later in life his lover Lou Andreas- Salome and his mentor the sculptor Rodin would be substitute mother and father figures. Andreas-Salome who was fourteen years older than him was a central transformative and supporting figure in his life. She was his only real longtime love and even after leaving him she continued to support him mentally and spiritually. The chapter on their relationship is perhaps the most interesting in this book. Rilke's great sense of the uncertainty of his own bodily being contributed to the deep and enigmatic quality of his poetry. I did not find the psychoanalytic terms and language particularly helpful in the telling of the story. But this work contains much insight into Rilke's life.One problematic element for me and I suspect for most English language readers is the fact that most of the cited poetry is cited in German without English translation. This academic study does not really focus on reading the work but rather on unraveling the personality. The book does not have to my mind a true concluding summary chapter and that somehow left me with the feeling of a work unfinished. But it does provide valuable insight into the ambiguity complexity and depth of one of the twentieth century's greatest poets.

In Colonization and Its Discontents, Tomek brings a much-needed examination of the complexity of the colonization movement by describing in depth the difference between those who supported colonization for political and social reasons and those who supported it for religious and humanitarian reasons. Finally, she puts the black perspective on emigration into the broader picture instead of treating black nationalism as an isolated phenomenon and examines its role in influencing the black abolitionist agenda.

"Recovering the Lost Self: Shame-Healing for Victims of Clergy Sexual Abuse" is an eye-opener. It discusses the deep and lasting effects of the abuse of both children and adults when they are abused by clergy. Much has (thankfully) been written about the clergy child abuse scandal within the church. Not as much has been written about the abuse of adults. Often an adult sexual relationship with clergy is deemed "consensual." Yet this discounts the power difference between a member of the clergy and those to whom they minister. Often a member of the clergy is approached when one is in need. When dealing with marriage struggles, the loss of a loved one, relationship struggles, job loss, or any number of other life difficulties, people will likely consult either a counselor or a member of the clergy for assistance. State licensing boards recognize the damage that can occur when a counselor, psychologist, therapist or psychiatrist engages in sexual or romantic relationship with his/her clients. Doing so is grounds for losing one's license. In some states, a clergy person is also considered to be a "counselor," and legal action applies against him/her as well. The damage is not only similar, but involves an added dimension: deep spiritual confusion. Dr. Horst makes clear that such a relationship is not an "affair," but is "abuse." She engagingly relates the healing approach of one recovering from such abuse to the Scriptural story of the woman with the hemorrhage. The book is both an eye-opener and a blessing. it is recommended not only for those who have suffered such abuse, but for those who assist them toward healing.

I didn't know about this book until recently. I had read and loved 'I Know My Own Heart' (republished in 2010 as 'The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister') in 1989. This, Helena Whitbread's second book, first published in 1992, is the lesser-known follow-up, covering the period Sept 1824 to Oct 1826.

In this second book almost every diary entry is preceded by a heading, which serves as a summary of that day for easy reference; and photographs, drawings, and paintings depict Anne's world.

The book begins with Anne's stay in Paris, where she courts a widow whose social standing and financial worth do not meet Anne's aspirations. Whilst continuing her affair with the love of her life, Marianna Lawton (married to Charles Lawton), Anne seeks a suitable life partner who will allow her to climb the social ranks.

About one sixth of Anne Lister's diaries (the encoded parts) reveal her desire for women and her forthright approach to satisfying that desire. Where this second book really wins out for me is that Helena Whitbread now seems less shy about sharing with her readers the finer details of Anne's lesbianism.
