I purchased this book years ago while enrolled at DeVry University. I was attending PSYCH 305 taught by none other than Professor Patricia J. Addesso Ph.D. I not only enjoyed having her as a professor but still have and love this book. I use what I learned from this text everyday in my daily relations with coworkers, employees and personal relationships. Thank you professor!!!

A wonderful edition of a phenomenal book. Though unfinished, H.D.'s 'Paint it Today' is rich with symbolism and imagery. Bulding from allusions to many writers of antiquity, H.D. provides inspirational and emotive lines articulating sentiments of love and truth. As H.D. writes, "The fiance had shown Midget what love might be or become if one, in desperation, should accept the shadow of an understanding for understanding itself. . . But there are many colors to our lives, I have been led to believe. The shadow of an understanding is not a bad beginning to one's emotional radius. Against the shadow, the better things show true" (22). This particular edition's endnotes extends the meaning in H.D.'s words, informing readers of mythological, literary and personal allusions.

foundaional approach to homiletics

I was looking for a basic homiletics text and have found it in this book. Cantalamessa looks at the Word of God itself, rather than methodology. He proposes a foundation for preaching and evangelization based on an experience of Jesus as a person rather than as a theological construct or concept. He does not eschew discussions of difficult topics, e.g. verbal inflation and absolute truth. His familiarity with a broad sampling of the Fathers of the Church and other literature both grounds and clarifies the presentation. The Alan Neame translation is a pleasure to read.

Lovely pictures,beautiful words...

The late Joseph O'connell was a master sculptor,craftsman andartist,whose main work, it appears was liturgical.thereby consigning him to a lesser place among artists in this era. Too bad,for his work leaps off the page,full of life and mirth,celebration and deep pathos. He seemed to understand suffering in a way that was not self-indulgent,and portrayed it in stone,magnificently.He did hands very well, touching, probing holding caressing, and for me they seem to hold the key to some of his works. My only complaint is that this book is quite expensive,though handsomely done.Funny when reading this I felt more comfortable listening to Count Basie and Louis Armstrong then Ambrosian chant or William Byrd. Perhaps that too, is a tribute to this fine, wonderful artist.

My father was an incredible sculptor. He lived his life to create the work you see in this book. I am honored by all that was written about him and I am thrilled to see this book put together with such care.

Joe O'Connell was a freelance sculptor and carver in central Minnesota who made a life out of wood and stone, carving for churches mainly, and his work is quite a wonder to behold. This book is the most complete so far and includes some fine photos, but of course O'Connell work encountered in the real world ---- the crucifixes, the BVMs, the marvellous carvings in which he represents Ellington and Fats Waller and Louis Armstrong as angels ---- the real thing is even more astonishing. He was a folk artist and a fine artist and the book is an homage to him.

In this work, Ms. O'Gara, a widely-read and well-informed author, provides glimpses of the path that the Spirit may use to effect the Christian unity for which Christ prayed so fervently. No obstacle as difficult at the role of the papacy has ever surfaced, and yet, even this role is examined in ways and from points of view through which the final achievement of unity -- one witness in solidarity with the Gospel among all Christians -- can be imagined and, God willing, actualized. This is a particular must read for Roman Catholics. God bless Ms. O'Gara in her continuing work in ecumenism. I hope to read more from her.

Unity Through Relativism

Margaret O'Gara writing as a Catholic theologian strangely misrepresents the Catholic position in her book. Misinterpretations of key theological terms, for example, such as "reception" leads O'Gara to denounce the Catholic view that the bishops are the true successors of the apostles.The book ultimately ends up being little more than an exercise in empty rhetoric.Those serious about ecumenical dialogue will be disappointed at O'Gara's efforts at relativizing religion.It seems she is not really interested in the true teachings of the various Christian denominations as much as she is intent on bringing them together under a common denominator - regardless of what that may mean. Those interested in learning what the Catholic church really teaches should read the numerous papal encyclicals on the various topics.

Religious Reform of Convenience

The book offers a series of essays on reform in the Church. Unfortunately the book is a subjective approach to reform that does not take into account the actual teachings of the various Christian denominations.The Catholic Church for example teaches that all Churches "subsist" in the Catholic Church. O'Gara,who is a professed Catholic, does not support this teaching in the book. Without acceptance of this teaching there can be no authentic unity. O'Gara's seeks primarily to advance her own views and not those of the various Christian denominations.The book is not for those serious about reform.

Outstanding

This is one of the few books that I have read twice. At times, I will take notes and grab passages from books that impress me. I was constantly writing while reading this book. Even more, I found myself writing almost as much the 2nd time through it, having different passages affecting me in a different way. I would not consider this too academic of a book since that is something that will put me to sleep. This is filled with very practical thoughts on how the Scriptures apply to everyday life. I found it particularly pertinent to my life right now.

An interesting topic but disappointing in execution

This book is disappointing in a number of ways. Most of the text presents the details of each life separately rather than exploring the similarities and their implications. Most of the biographical details are imaginative extrapolations from the sources and are far more questionable than the general reader is likely to realize. And the few instances where the author directly examines the significance of the parallels sound more like miniature homilies from the pulpit than the considered judgment of a historian dispassionately judging the reliability of conflicting sources.

The author asserts that Jesus and Paul were similar in six ways. They were born about the same year; they both became refugees with their parents at a very early age; they both grew up in an alien environment far from their birthplace; each had a "temporary vocation" (Jesus as prophet and Paul as Pharisee); each had a "second conversion" as a result of which each rejected the Law; and each was executed by the Romans.

A chapter covers each parallel by recounting first the relevant facts of Jesus' life story, then those of Paul's. The elaborately detailed stories describe even the private thoughts and emotions of their protagonists, with few warnings about the difficulties, uncertainties, and ambiguities of the sources. For example, here are excerpts from the account of Jesus' visit to the temple at age 12, the only source of which is Luke (2:41-51):

"I strongly suspect, however, that Jesus argued to be permitted to go with them. He still did not know what God had in mind for him, and the following year he would be an adult, and perhaps culpable in the case of failure. Certainly, it is only in this perspective that we can understand why he overstayed in Jerusalem to hear and question the teachers in the temple. ... The determination of Jesus to prolong the contact with the teachers, even at the risk of disobedience to his parents, reveals that he was not getting the answer he desperately needed. ... If his family and human teachers had failed him, then it seemed to Jesus' twelve-year-old intelligence that he had a better chance of learning God's will for him by staying as close to the divine presence as possible. He undoubtedly knew that it was in a vision in the temple that Isaiah received his vocation. ... What Murphy-O'Connor asserts is "certain" is often quite questionable. Assuming a 12-year-old's worry about approaching adulthood is hardly the "only" way to understand this text. The author asserts that similarities among the gospels leads to the "certain conclusion" that they rely on oral tradition, and that helps make them reliable historical witnesses. But the assertion about oral tradition is questionable, and in any case one would still have to question the historicity of the oral tradition itself. He asserts that because "no evangelist would invent Jesus' failure to carry his cross," the historicity of the periscope about Simon of Cyrene is "guaranteed." But it may simply be that he has not fully understood the intended theological point of the story. Indeed, to what degree can the historicity of any source, especially an ancient one and a secondary one at that, be considered "guaranteed"? Murphy O'Connor even asserts the likelihood of the virgin birth: "The historicity of the virgin birth cannot be established positively, but the extreme improbability that it is a theological creation makes its factuality a more appropriate starting point for the historian."

The reader may be tempted to believe that some of Murphy-O'Connor's "historical" conclusions are driven by his church's theology. The author firmly asserts that Paul had to have been married because all Jewish males would have done so as a matter of course, but in the face of the same lack of source data for Jesus he asserts Jesus, of course, never did marry. He asserts that Jesus' rejection of the Law amounted to "an implicit claim to sovereign authority" but for some reason Paul's did not. It often appears that the centrality of an article of faith is what makes it historical in Murphy-O'Connor's judgment. In peripheral matters he freely admits that the evangelists simply made up material as needed, which was OK because it was "in a good cause." This is his explanation for the stories of Paul's conversion and the words spoken by Jesus from the cross (pages 79, 96).

Given that so much of the text seems to be written by a believer, it comes as no surprise when the insights gleaned from the parallels seem to be for other believers. Thus, the ultimate conclusion of the book is that the parallels remind us that Christ was not just God but was also truly human:

"What is truly human is to struggle to discern one's vocation, to shape one's destiny in the face of adversity, to confront violent death. By putting Jesus in parallel with Paul, who obviously had to make such crucial and fundamental choices, we are forced to recognize that Jesus went through the same agonizing process."

Given that so much of the "agonizing process" detailed before this is imaginative reconstructions based upon sparse source evidence, and given that only certain Christian believers need reminding that Jesus was human, many readers are bound to find this book disappointing.

This is not to say that the topic itself is of little value. Perhaps the greatest disappointment of this book is that genuine parallels which could provide great insight into Biblical text and history are overlooked altogether. A book I helped edit 10 years ago, The New Testament: An Introduction: Paul and Mark, points out a long series of remarkable similarities between Mark 7:1-22 and Gal 2:11-14, which, taken together, lead to the conclusion that Jesus' experience in this case was most likely a literary reprisal of an experience of Paul's. When one realizes that Paul's letters were written 30 years before Mark and may well have been the only written sources Mark had available; and when one combines that with a willingness to admit along with Murphy-O'Connor that the evangelists made up what they needed "in a good cause," it becomes quite believable that parallels are literary rather than historical. And that would lead to very different insights from those expressed by Murphy-O'Connor.

A diferent look at Jesus and Paul

A group from our parish is reading and discussing this book. For all of us it has meant thinking about the years Jesus spent before he began his public ministry. Jerome Murphy-O'Connor bases his suppositions about Jesus and Paul on history. As older Catholics we find that we are discovering the humanity of Jesus whereas most of us grew up thinking only of his divinity.

Interesting Concept

Murphy-O'Connor is careful to say that there are parallels between Jesus and Paul.Paralleling two significant people is not new. It has its precedents in ancient literature. Murphy-O'Connor dazzles with intriguing information. A must read for those interested in the New Testament world.
