In Lydia: Paul's Cosmopolitan Hostess, Richard S.Ascough constructs an image of Lydia based on what is known about the political, commercial, social, and religious norms of the first-century world. Ascough describes the styles of possible dwellings in which Lydia could have lived, the business opportunities that would have been available to her, and the religious cults that held sway in Philippi at the time. With Ascough, readers will find that the importance of Lydia's story is that she hears the message of God through Paul and responds with faith.

Richard S. Ascough is associate professor of New Testament at Queen's Theological College, Kingston, Ontario. He is the author of numerous articles and essays on the documents and contexts of the early Jesus believers, particularly their community structures. While the apostle Paul is well known, the people who made his work possible are not. "Lydia: Paul's Cosmopolitan Hostess" is part of a series dedicated to these people, the series dubbed 'Paul's Social Network'. Lydia was a woman who embraced Paul's message and served as a hostess for Paul's campaign of faith, giving support to one of the leaders of early Christianity. Having researched this little known woman, author Richard S. Ascough gives readers the best picture he can of one of history's behind the scenes players. "Lydia" is well worth the read for Christian scholars and those simply intrigued by the history of early Christianity.

Italy. His funeral will be Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Catherdral of Milan Italy. Approximately August 8, 2012, he gave his a final
interview to reporters from Corriere della Sera, an Italian paper. In it he was quoted "[European and American] culture has aged, our
churches are big and empty and the church bureaucracy rises up, our rituals and our cassocks are pompous. ... The Church has remained 200
years behind the times. Why has it not been shaken up? Are we scared? Fear instead of courage?". He will be buried in his spiritual home,
Jerusalem, Israel. He was a brave and courageous spiritual leader and his writings will have a very long impact on our lives.

I am an artist doing work based on kufic calligraphy and am always looking for materials that present information on said calligraphy. The items covered in Ms Blair's book are wonderful, and I learned much more about the culture that produced them as well. A wonderful book.

Whoever contemplates this mystery learns much about God, Christ, Mary, the Church and oneself.

The Virgin Mary is one who walked in the darkness of faith and never despaired, one who obeyed and never deserted, one who loved and was never unfaithful. She is an example of the perfect disciple. Mary was Jesus' first and the most perfect disciple of Christ.

The Virgin Mary, taken up into heaven after her earthly life, remains for us the symbol of all that we should be, and of all that we will be, if only we are faithful to Christ. She is the woman in the life of Christ and the woman in the life of all who follow him.

On earth Mary was the mother of Jesus and his wholehearted companion, his comfort and joy. Now in heaven close to Jesus, she watches over us with a mother's care and intercedes for us. She is our life, our sweetness and our hope. She is our shining example. Where she is, we shall be. God knows we need the woman clothed in glory.

The purpose of this book is to contemplate the Virgin Mary in her heavenly glory. The book's reflections go beyond the mystery of the Assumption in itself to contemplate the Mother of God in glory in relation to Christ and the Church. For Mary in glory is close to Christ and the people of God. We hope to penetrate more deeply this twofold mystery.

To facilitate this task, the book is divided the study into two parts: The Assumption in the Mystery of Christ, and the Assumption in the Mystery of the Church.

The first part follows the model of Chapter eight of the Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council. There as here, Mary is considered first in the mystery of Christ and then in the mystery of the Church.

The first part is actually a commentary on the Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus that defined the dogma of the Assumption. It is here we perceive that the Assumption is not an isolated privilege granted to Mary, but one that is intimately joined with the person and mission of Christ. Her triumphal entrance into glory is part of Christ's victory over sin and death.

The second part goes beyond the Constitution and ponders the Immaculate Virgin in heaven in relation to the mystery of the Church. The first consideration is Mary in heaven as the model, image and beginning of the pilgrim Church. This is followed by her relation to the suffering and heavenly Church. The final chapter ponders the texts of the liturgical feast of the Assumption. It is in the liturgy of the feast that we experience God's love for the human family; Mary's inseparable union with Christ her Son and Savior, and the joy that we are called to experience once our pilgrimage of faith is over. For, taken up to heaven we join Mary in the communion of saints in union with Christ our Lord.

An excellent explanation of the Assumption of Mary. This author is obviously a teacher. He is crystal clear in his explanations. He also manages to outline the objections people raised to the dogma and explain how the Church responded to these objections. Really a book well worth having on one's shelf.

History is rife with tales of fighting women. More often than not, these stories prove more legend than history. Dating back to the amazons of ancient Asia Minor, myths of fierce, autonomous women of martial excellence abound.

And yet, the only thoroughly documented amazons in world history are the women warriors of Dahomy, an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Western African kingdom. Once dubbed a "small black Sparta," residents of Dahomy shared with the Spartans an intense militarism and sense of collectivism. Moreover, the women of both kingdoms prided themselves on bodies hardened from childhood by rigorous physical exercise. But Spartan women kept in shape to breed male warriors, Dahomean amazons to kill them. Originally a praetorian guard, the Dahomeans developed into a force 6,000 strong and were granted semi-sacred status. They lusted for battle, fighting with fury and valor until the kingdom's final defeat by France in 1892.

About the Author

Stanley B. Alpern worked as a sub-editor for the New York Herald Tribune and then as a foreign service officer of the United States Information Agency for twenty-two years, two of which were spent in West Africa. He lives on the French Riviera.

Not just Amazons...

We are talking about female soldiers with their own officers and uniforms, formed into units and trained to fight with muskets, machetes and their bare teeth. The first part of the book covers these subjects, plus the physical and insensitivity training they had to help them overcome pain and increase discipline.
The second part deals with their history in battle from their first use against other tribes to their last battles against the French before the kingdom's downfall.

What A Pleasant Surprise

I've always been leery of ordering anything online. You know the usual fears of your private information being on the net or getting an item that's not up to par. However while visiting and surfing on amazon, I found a book that I was just captivated by and had to purchase. The name of the book is:Amazons Of Black Sparta,The Women Warriors Of Dahomey. I find the subject matter in the book facsinating although the book itself reads a little bit like and encyclopedia. However the book consists of a lot of dates and historical facts that one might find interesting. And the history of African Women Warriors in a kindom empire called Dahomey is a history that I know many people aren't familiar with. So for that alone this book is a little treasure. The book although slightly used arrived on time and in good condition and I am well pleased with those facts.
