The aim of this commentary is to provide feminist interpretation of Scripture in serious, scholarly engagement with the whole text, not only those texts that explicitly mention women. A central concern is the world in front of the text, that is, how the text is heard and appropriated by women. At the same time, this commentary aims to be faithful to the ancient text, to explicate the world behind the text, where appropriate, and not impose contemporary questions onto the ancient texts. The commentary addresses not only issues of gender (which are primary in this project) but also those of power, authority, ethnicity, racism, and classism, which all intersect.

Each volume incorporates diverse voices and differing interpretations from different parts of the world, showing the importance of social location in the process of interpretation and that there is no single definitive feminist interpretation of a text.

This book answers a lot of questions about the Latino culture, experience, past, present and future. Some essays tell stories, while others are plain facts. This book has about 670 pages, yet it is a fast and informative read where you can't put the book down. It is organized by section of topic and gives suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter. A good introductory to Latin American studies, historically, culturally, and sociologically. It gives a lot of information for the price, you will not regret buying this book.

Excellent book, but know in advance....

Excellent book, but know in advance that this book is heavily skewed toward legal topics and lawyer authors. While much of the legal writing is dense for lay readers, it is often well worth the effort. The selections authored by Margaret Montoya, Kevin Johnson, editor Richard Delgado, and non-attorney Gloria Anzaldua were the very best of this remarkably well-written anthology.

About the Author
Fr. Gregory Collins, OSB, has been a monk of Glenstal Abbey for twenty years. He is an expert on Orthodox theology, a past headmaster of the Abbey school, and was director of the Monastic Institute at the Benedictine University of Sant'Anselmo in Rome. The Glenstal Book of Icons: Praying With The Glenstal Icons by Gregory Collins OSB (Lecturer in Orthodox Theology, Benedictine University of Sant' Anselmo, Rome), presents diverse prayers and meditations on various icons from St John's Abbey's Byzantine chapel. Full-color photographs of the icons themselves (which in the monastic practice of lectio divina are seen as "texts" prompting meditation on Christian mysteries), as well as an extensive and erudite commentary on the practice of praying with these classic works of art and faith, make The Glenstal Book of Icons the next best thing to personally visiting the abbey to view these venerated icons on location.

The Glenstal Abbey in County Limerick, Ireland, is a wonderful place to behold. They are a Benedictine monastery, operating a school, a ministry of hospitality, and providing an expression of Benedictine spirituality in the modern world. The pattern of their liturgical and prayer life is a modified form of the ancient Benedictine structure; this book takes a particular aspect of this - praying with the icons that are in the Abbey's Byzantine Chapel.

Protestants particularly have lost the tradition of the use of art work as representative objects for worship. However, the debate over the appropriateness of icons and other imagery is almost as old as Christianity itself. There was a time when icons of Christ were banned because Jesus, being of divine nature, wasn't suitable for depiction. That Jesus could be depicted without violation of the 'no graven images' commandment took a long time to be decided, and finally was deemed permissible because of Jesus' human nature. Rare the depiction of God or God the Father as anything more than a cloud, a hand, or some other vague symbol meant to characterise, more than anything else, the mystery involved rather than an actual physical likeness. Michaelangelo's depictions on the Sistine Chapel ceiling are remarkable not simply from their aesthetic quality, but also in that the image of God is very direct and distinctly human in form. Williams devotes many pages of the introduction to looking at precisely the issue of the theology behind the depiction of Jesus.

However, icons are a special form of art. They are not simple paintings, however elegant, but take the form, from their origination to their veneration, as a form of prayer in and of themselves in very real ways. Christian art was a long time in developing (indeed, the earliest Christians were sometimes thought to be atheists since they had no visible evidence of gods around).

This book gives a brief introduction to the role of icons in liturgy and theology, relating it to both ancient and postmodern ideas. Prayer need not be elaborate or done with exacting precision, despite the appearance of many kinds of liturgies to the contrary. 'The work of prayer is very simple,' the text tells us, in making us mindful of the presence of God. The icons help remind the pray-er of this presence; while some prayers are often said with the eyes closed, it can also help for the mind to meditate upon the images as the prayers are said, aloud or internally as silent prayers.

Icons presented here include images of Christ in various times (baptism, crucifixion, ascension, etc.), the Mother of God, various saints (Basil, Nicholas, Athanasius, etc.), and the Trinity - unusual in a way, as both the Eastern and Western Trinity representations do not show the actual person of the Trinity, as iconography (particularly Eastern iconography) doesn't generally permit depiction of Father or the Holy Spirit in a 'personal' form.

Each of the icons is presented with description about what is represented in the actual artwork, what the symbols are often understood as being, and some historical interpretations attached to each. Each is also accompanied with prayers that can be said with and in front of each.

The book itself is in a small format, about as wide as an average hand, which means it fits into the palm perfectly, as if it were made for being carried and used on a regular basis. The printing and paper stocks used are superb - as much as I am generally loathe to describe books in such terms, the basic construction of this book is worthy of note, as it adds 'flesh' to the prayers being given out of this text. It is a joy to read from the sensory perspective as well as the spiritual perspective.

This book is the same size and shape as another volume from Glenstal Abbey, their book of prayer in the Benedictine form. Together these make a wonderful resource for spiritual retreats and self-study.

The Glenstal Abbey taps into an ancient history, but is itself a relatively new establishment, having been founded in 1927 as the first Benedictine monastery in Ireland since the Reformation (King Henry VIII dissolved monasteries as part of his Reformations in the British Isles). This book is a great reflection of part of their community.

Lovely book of reflections

A Roman Catholic Benedictine, Gregory Collins does a nice job of linking East and West and this lovely book of reflections. While not all of the icons depicted are in the best of condition, Collins lovingly explains each icon in terms of its visual symbolism, traditional background, and style, opening up the story of each saint depicted. I enjoyed his use of prayers from across Roman and Byzantine Catholic liturgy, as well as those of Eastern Orthodoxy.

Unlike many other racial minorities in our country, Middle Eastern Americans have faced rising, rather than diminishing, degrees of discrimination over time; a fact highlighted by recent targeted immigration policies, racial profiling, a war on terrorism with a decided racialist bent, and growing rates of job discrimination and hate crime. Oddly enough, however, Middle Eastern Americans are not even considered a minority in official government data. Instead, they are deemed white by law.

In Whitewashed, John Tehranian combines his own personal experiences as an Iranian American with an expert’s analysis of current events, legal trends, and critical theory to analyze this bizarre Catch-22 of Middle Eastern racial classification. He explains how American constructions of Middle Eastern racial identity have changed over the last two centuries, paying particular attention to the shift in perceptions of the Middle Easterner from friendly foreigner to enemy alien, a trend accelerated by the tragic events of 9/11. Focusing on the contemporary immigration debate, the war on terrorism, media portrayals of Middle Easterners, and the processes of creating racial stereotypes, Tehranian argues that, despite its many successes, the modern civil rights movement has not done enough to protect the liberties of Middle Eastern Americans.

By following how concepts of whiteness have transformed over time, Whitewashed forces readers to rethink and question some of their most deeply held assumptions about race in American society.

With a pastiche of personal experience, media analysis and legal theory, law professor Tehranian makes a case for "government recognition of Middle Eastern descent as a distinct racial category." He argues that Middle Eastern whiteness is a "bizarre racial fiction," for citizens of Middle Eastern descent "do not enjoy the benefits of white privilege," but "are denied the fruits of remedial action." Tehranian traces the acquisition of whiteness by successive waves of immigrants (Irish, Italian, Greek, Slavs, Armenians) through litigation where "assimilatory behavior" or "white performance" provides entry. But Middle Easterners hit a bump in the road, amplified in post-9/11 America: "selective racialization"--the famous or successful are perceived as white, while the infamous "are racialized as Middle Eastern." Tehranian addresses the impact of the "war on terror" on the lives and liberties of Middle Eastern Americans as their "public image transitioned from (possibly white) assimilable ethnics to the quintessential Other." His proposals for reform range from the ameliorative ("reform media portrayals") to the legislative (outlaw racial profiling). Fascinating and important

This book was quite fascinating to read. For a long time, I have wondered how Arab Americans are considered "white/Caucasian" on the US Census, but are perceived as racially and/or ethnically different by most Americans. The history of that issue provided by Tehranian is thoughtful and eye-opening, and he creates a bridge from the past to the present to help you understand the situation today.

Much needed exposure of a cruel bias

John Tehranian has written a book that everybody in the USA should read. Unfortunately, his language tends to be stilted and will not serve his purpose well ... too bad, as this book is important.

We have become too complacent about our liberties and rights as citizens. He points out how our society has selectively denied human rights (even to citizens) on whimsical/racial/current-topic bases.

It's sad that the wonderful country that we enjoy is far from truly honoring the individual human spirit and giving credit to folks from other cultures who have come here and contributed to our society.

The USA is an on-going experiment for human dignity and freedom. The vast majority of the folks coming into our country bring us the diversity and the work ethic and the skills that we need.

God bless America, as it is still the best hope for the advancement of true freedom. A work in progress!

Most relevant book of the year

This book addresses one of the most relevant and timely issues for Middle Easterners today, bringing attention to the conflict they face between their racial classification as "white," and the increased discrimination they now experience in a post 9/11 world. It also makes one rethink the entire notion of "race." John Tehranian traces the history and development of race and the idea of "whiteness," arriving at the conclusion that it is ultimately a social construct based on everything but skin color. By citing fascinating US court cases regarding the racial classification of various individuals, John Tehranian illuminates the arbitrary nature of race, especially as it pertains to the Middle Eastern community in the US. Living in a post 9/11 world, this book is highly relevant not only to individuals of Middle Eastern descent, but to the population as a whole as we address the issue of discrimination against Middle Easterners. Mr. Tehranian has taken a very complex issue and presented it in an accessible and engaging manner, making it one of the most enjoyable and informative books I have ever come accross.

Jean Stefancic is Research Professor of Law at Seattle University and is the author of many articles and books on civil rights, law reform, social change, including No Mercy: How Conservative Think Tanks and Foundations Changed America’s Social Agenda.

Have Questions about Authority in the Catholic Church? This is the book for YOU!

This is comprehensive study of the history of authority in the Roman Catholic Church. It truly helped me to understand why the Church operates as it does and why changes are so hard to implement and take so very long to affect the universal Church.

The need for reform, in the highest levels of the Church's structure, is so evident when one sees how far the Roman Rite has strayed from our earliest days as Church. Yet, it is also equally noted that true change, true reform will take time and must be multifaceted, while being fundamentally accepted by the hierarchy and the people in the pew almost simultaneously - a Herculean task! This makes it imperative for those in authority to explain changes and the reasons for their need thoroughly to the People of God prior to changes actually being promulgated.

Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is with us!!!

Please note: This is an academic text. There was so much to absorb, it took me longer than usual to read. Well worth the effort!
