This Civil War sampler combines 19th-century battlefield accounts with past and contemporary scholarship to offer a broad perspective on the historiographical issues scholars have raised concerning the soldiers' total experience: who the combatants were, how they survived, how they waged war, how they felt about their role in the conflict, the nature and depth of their convictions regarding the struggle, and how their ordeals contrasted with those of soldiers who fought in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Although editors Barton (Pennsylvania State Univ.; An Illustrated History of Greater Harrisburg) and Logue (Mississippi Coll.; To Appomattox and Beyond) are interested in such specific issues as the influence of the South's military tradition on its fighting men and the still raging debate as to whether both sides fought for ideals or their comrades, the overarching question of the study remains the basic social, cultural, and psychological differences between Johnny Reb and Billy Yank. This anthology of 27 selections is divided into five themes: who the soldiers were, how they lived, how they fought, how they felt, and what they believed. The selections address such issues as who joined the two armies and why they joined; the problem of ill-clad Confederate troops; popular diversions such as letter-writing, drinking, and music when the soldiers were not fighting; and the misconceptions involving black soldiers and their conduct in combat. There are pieces on heroes and cowards, rebels as "barbarians," the horror of infantry firefights, the ecology of battle (terrain, fighting at night, and fortifications), morale and moral values, religion (especially evangelical preaching in the South), emotional reactions to combat, and the importance of courage and honor. By rejecting conventional bipolar categories, we can broaden our understanding of sexuality, gender race, and disability. Acknowledging that categorization is crucial and unavoidable in a world of practical problems and day-to-day conflicts, Colker shows how categories can and must be improved, for the good of all.

Ruth Colker is Distinguished University Professor and the Heck-Faust Memorial Chair in Constitutional Law at the Michael E. Moritz College of Law, Ohio State University. A great contestation of the liminalities

Professor Colker is a bisexual woman with a wandering eye. Being not-quite lesbian, and not-quite disabled has pushed her to ask questions about the murkiness of categorization. In this book, she dedicates a chapter to the "bi's" of race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. This is mainly a legal text, but I think non-legal readers will still be entertained. I wasn't bowled over by this book, but I think it is great that someone is speaking of multiracials and bisexuals in the same breath and looking at the grey areas across categories. This book is a must have for various "bi" activists.

Worthy of exegetical debate and ecumenical dialogue.

It was John Calvin who suggested that the N. T. is commentary on the Hebrew scriptures, while Karl Barth insisted on repeated and renewed exegesis. The long years of history have a tendency to develop into hardened dogma and Christianity is no exception. In the light of the above, "The Open Tomb" should be seriously considered as a candidate for exegetical debate. Also, since Christianity has its roots in the Hebrew scriptures, "The Open Tomb" could well serve as a door for ecumenical relations. Instead of trying to piece together the fractions of Christianity, it may be more appropriate and in the long run more advantageous, to begin with its roots, in Israel.

About the Author

Paul H. Robinson has written influential commentary for the New York Times (on the Unabomber case), the Wall Street Journal (on the beating of Reginald Denny after the O.J. verdict), and for Atlantic Monthly. The author of several books, he is currently the Edna B. and Ednyfed H. Williams Professor of Law at Northwestern University.

Makes you realize why justice is blind!

Every day we read about the another high profile case that when the trial is completed there are what seems to be an endless series of debates. Would you convict is a glimpse into 17 cases that make you think.
No one has ever said justice was perfect, but after you read this book you may wonder if there is any justice at all. A great attention to fine details laces this amazing work.
Watch and read and one person is given life over a bad check for $129. Your heart may skip a beat as you read about a mother neglected by her son or was she? Each story is stops you and makes you look at the law a little differently.
The author's has the unique ability to bring to life each case and you become the jury foreman. This book should be a must read for those interested in law or becoming and lawyer. Well done!

This book, written by a law professor, takes real cases and illustrates the complexity of law. Without a bias, the cases make the reader think about how hard "justice" is to achieve in the real world. Gave a copy to my children to stimulate a great discussion.

About the Author
B. F. Skinner, an American behavioral psychologist, is known for his many contributions to learning theory. His Behavior of Organisms (1938) reports his experiments with the study of reflexes. Walden Two (1949), a utopian novel, describes a planned community in which positive rather than negative reinforcers serve to maintain appropriate behavior; the novel stimulated the founding of some experimental communities. In Beyond Freedom and Dignity (1971), Skinner attempted to show that only what he called a technology of behavior could save democracy from the many individual and social problems that plague it. (An early example of this technology is the so-called Skinner box for conditioning a human child.) A teacher at Harvard University from 1948 until his retirement, Skinner was for some the model of the objective scientist, for others the epitome of the heartless behaviorist who would turn people into automatons.

THE FIRST OF THREE VOLUMES OF SKINNER'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990) was an American psychologist, social philosopher,and author. He was a Professor of Psychology at Harvard University from 1958 until his retirement in 1974, and perhaps the most influential behaviorist of the 20th century. His most famous books are Verbal Behavior, Beyond Freedom & Dignity and Walden Two. The other volumes are SHAPING OF A BEHAVIORIST (Particulars of My Life, Part 2) and A Matter of Consequences (B.F. Skinner's Autobiography, Pt 3).

Of his time in Sunday School, Skinner reports, "I remember one incident in that period: ashamed of myself for being afraid of a God I did not believe in I went about saying to myself, "God d___ Jesus Christ...'" (Pg. 61) But years later, he recorded in a journal, "I came to believe that I had received a divine message. The fervor of that revelation is yet possible to me as I recall the day... I cannot, now, trace the dissolution of the idea. I entered high school..." (Pg. 110-111) Later, he notes, "I began to reconsider my bold announcement to Miss Graves that I no longer believed in God... Inevitably I argued religion with other students... Uneasy about all this, I went to Bill Squires... With a voice quavering with emotion I said that I was worried because I had 'lost my faith.' He did little to help... I recovered my strength and the issue gradually faded." (Pg. 220)

Of his college time, he observes, "The result of my insensitivity to the counter-control exercised by my fellows was a reputation for conceit... I did not feel that I was superior to my fellow students; I simply wanted to make it clear that I was not inferior. And were we not ALL there to better ourselves?" (Pg. 200)

After graduation, "I set to work to become a writer... I fell into a routine. After breakfast I went to my attic study. I forced myself to work on a story ... In a short time I would turn to reading 'literary' things which, I could argue, would further my productivity... I had become a pipe smoker... To all external appearances, then, I was a writer." (Pg. 262-263) But he admits, "I was easily distracted from my life as a writer. Anything that yielded quicker and more substantial rewards took possession of me." (Pg. 271) He grouses in his journal, "The world considers me lazy because I do not earn bread. The world expects ... that if I 'got a job' for eight hours of office work... I should be a man. It's not so much my 'being a man' that people desire, it is my being one of them. I see clearly now that the only thing left for me to do in life is to justify myself for doing nothing." (Pg. 282-283)

He ultimately realizes, "I was interested in human behavior, but I had been investigating it the wrong way... Literature as an art form was dead; I would turn to science... The science that concerned itself with behavior (animals or human) was said to be psychology, about which I knew very little." (Pg. 291-292) After reading a book by Bertrand Russell that discussed John B. Watson, he concluded, "why should I hesitate? There was no reason at all. It was to be graduate study in psychology." (Pg. 301)

This book is interesting as background, but it provides limited insight into Skinner the behaviorist; turn to the next two volumes for that story.

Human beings are embedded in a set of social relations. A social network is one way of conceiving that set of relations in terms of a number of persons connected to one another by varying degrees of relatedness. In the early Jesus group documents featuring Paul and coworkers, it takes little effort to envision the apostle's collection of friends and friends of friends that is the Pauline network. The persons who constituted that network are the focus of this set of brief books. For Christians of the Western tradition, these persons are significant ancestors in faith. While each of them is worth knowing by themselves, it is largely because of their standing within that web of social relations woven about and around Paul that they are of lasting interest. Through this series we hope to come to know those persons in ways befitting their first-century Mediterranean culture.

Epaphras belonged to Paul's network of friends. Because Epaphras is mentioned only three times in the Second Testament, in the letters to Philemon and the Colossians, it is unsurprising that he is passed over by biblical scholars more interested in Paul's better-known companions. Michael Trainor points out, however, that even though Epaphras is mentioned infrequently, Colossians portrays him as an authentic interpreter of Paul and an important teacher. After al, by the time the letter to the Colossians was written, Paul was dead. Epaphras ensures for that community and the next generation of Christians the continuity, as well as the freshness and vitality, of Paul's teaching. Thus Epaphras has great relevance for Christians today who seek ways to engage the contemporary world in light of their discipleship.

Michael Trainor teaches at the Adelaide College of Divinity, in the School of Theology, Flinders University, South Australia. He has published widely in areas of theology, education, and Scripture. His most recent book with Liturgical Press was The Quest for Home: The Household in Mark's Gospel (2001). His interest in Epaphras comes out of his current research with colleagues in Australia and Turkey to interpret archaeologically the site of ancient Colossae in southern Turkey.

Trainor’s little book makes an elusive character, mentioned only three times in the New Testament, come to life. Through careful word study he unlocks layers of meaning, and presents sociological and anthropological models in easily comprehensible language. The use of network analysis enables the social networks implied in the Letters to Philemon and the Colossians to be so illustrated that it actually gives us something of a commentary on the two Letters. Trainor effectively maintains the balancing act between various positions on Pauline authorship. This is a must have work if you want to understand the background of Colossians.

Michael Trainor has opened new windows for me to see a treasure chest of insight nuggets of Paul's and Epaphras' ministry. The 95 pages of text is followed by 11 pages of footnotes and 7 pages of bibliography to cover a faithful minister of Christ who is only mentioned three times in the New Testament. But the scholarly work done by the author is easily accessible, sophisticated and concise. I have thoroughly enjoyed the way that Trainor has explained the relationship that Paul and Epaphras had and how Paul affirmed him in the eyes of the Colossians as a fellow slave of Christ. This work is wonderfully balanced with Christ-centeredness, is descriptive of the challenge of their gospel ministry and provides linguistic analysis of many Greek words that take the reading into a very meaningful encounter with the issues (gnosticism, ritualistic spirituality, endorsing of spiritually qualified leaders) they were dealing with in their context. For the pastor and preacher or disciple maker or any one who is serious about carrying the gospel through this generation to the next, the book has much to offer. I have wholeheartedly recommended this work to a number of men and women in the ministry, both professional and laymen. Well worth the price especially if you are teaching or preaching from Colossians or Philemon.
