The pain and problem of Job

This is another excellent commentary in the New Collegeville Bible Commentary series. Short but compact, O'Connor gives descriptive commentary on each chapter of the book of Job without sounding preachy or too dogmatic.

The sections are short and informative, and well edited.

The only thing I'd change about the book would be the translation used, the New American Bible, Revised Edition. Chapter 3:1 of the book of Job for instance, reads.. "and cursed his day." (pg.15) A more accurate translation would inform the reader that Job in fact, cursed the day he was born. "His day" doesn't really convey the essential meaning of the verse.

But overall, a short and easy readable commentary on one of the most perplexing books of the Bible.

Groundbreaking study of the interrogation of youth

During my ten years practicing in juvenile delinquency court, I've been struck by the overwhelming number of cases in which youth readily confess to police -- often school resource officers. Sophisticated interrogation techniques are usually not required. The officer need only get the kid alone in a hallway, a police cruiser, or school conference room, and the youth complies -- giving long answers to questions, trying to rationalize or explain away their behavior but succeeding only in implicating themselves. The interviews are usually quite brief -- thirty minutes or less. On the rare occasion when a parent is present, it makes no difference -- they allow full questioning of their child and rarely intervene. And once the police have a confession, there's usually a plea (or "admission"), rather than a trial. The result is a criminal system that is more inquisitorial than adversarial, which is not what I would call "justice."

Professor Barry Feld (Minnesota) has a new book out from NYU Press, Kids, Cops, and Confessions: Inside the Interrogation Room, that is a vital resource for anyone who cares about what happens to kids when they are questioned by police. Professor Feld analyzes quantitative and qualitative data, including tapes, transcripts, police reports, juvenile court files, and dispositional reports from over 300 cases in which 16 and 17-year-olds were charged with felonies in one of four counties in Minnesota. In each of these cases, the files included either an interrogation tape or transcript or the juvenile had invoked Miranda rights. Professor Feld also conducted extensive interviews with police, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and juvenile court judges to learn their views about the interrogation of juveniles.

The result is a groundbreaking study that vividly illustrates the particular vulnerability of minors, providing further evidence that the protections we provide adults during interrogation do not begin to suffice for teenagers. An Important Look Inside the Interrogation Room

In Indianapolis, a teenager was asked to explain his rights to an arresting officer. "I know my rights. I have the right to say whatever I want," he replied.

This misinterpretation of Miranda rights is not uncommon. According to Dr. Barry Feld,"Many juveniles - especially those 15 years of age and younger - do not understand the words or rights contained in the Miranda warning."
In order to better understand this phenomenon, Feld went to a place very few juvenile justice advocates have been allowed to enter: the interrogation room. Since 1995, Minnesota has required police to record all interrogations. It is one of only three states where such recordings are required for all custodial interrogations. A few more states require it for homicide interrogations or very young offenders.

Feld's Unique Research
County attorneys there gave Feld unrestricted access to files on all felony cases involving 16- and 17-year-old offenders. He then narrowed his sample by selecting only the cases where a youth invoked Miranda or where a youth waived and there was a transcript or recording of the interrogation.

Feld's is only the second empirical study of interrogations since Miranda was decided in 1966 - and the first involving juveniles. Feld analyzed 307 recordings and transcripts of police questioning teenagers. The results of this analysis, as well as the policy recommendations to which they led, are presented in Feld's new book: Kids, Cops & Confessions: Inside the Interrogation Room.

In 90% of the cases Feld analyzed, juvenile suspects waived their Miranda rights and chose to answer police questions, often incriminating themselves in the process.

In most of these cases, once a waiver had been obtained, police questioned youth using the same psychological techniques they would use on an adult suspect.

The majority of the kids in question confessed, and an additional third gave police some incriminating information.
While parents were present in some of the interrogations, their presence rarely resulted in greater protection of their children's constitutional rights. In fact, in most cases, Feld found that parents sided with the police in questioning, and urged their children to tell the police everything they knew.

Feld's Recommendations for Best Practices

Given these startling findings, how then do we balance the right of the police to interrogate a suspect with a child's right against self-incrimination? Feld offers several recommendations for future best practices:

Mandatory assistance of counsel for suspects under age 15. Children 15 years and younger are rarely able to understand their rights, let alone assert them. In these tense interrogations, parents often cannot or do not act to protect their children's constitutional rights, and police have a different agenda entirely. Having an attorney in the room from the start ensures that police interrogations of youthful offenders meet constitutional requirements.

Mandatory recording of all interviews. Right now, only Alaska, Wisconsin and Minnesota require recording of all police interrogations, with about half a dozen other states requiring recording for only the most serious offenses. With inexpensive and readily available technology, Feld believes that recording police interviews will allow for greater objectivity, transparency and accountability in the justice system.

Time limits on police interrogations. According to Feld's findings, interrogations that elicit false confessions usually last more than six hours, with the likelihood of a false confession increasing as the length of questioning increases. This suggests that one way to protect the rights of juveniles while simultaneously enhancing the accuracy of the information received is to simply limit the length of time police are questioning kids.

The growing research on adolescent development, mounting evidence against eye witness testimony, and the exposure of numerous cases of false confessions make Kids, Cops, and Confessions: Inside the Interrogation Room by University of Minnesota Professor Barry C.Feld an intriguing and incredibly useful body of research for anyone involved in the juvenile justice system. Feld uses data from Minnesota to delve into the factors surrounding the interrogations of youth to determine some of the factors that impact case outcomes. In particular, he focuses on how Interrogators utilize the same techniques they would adults despite the incredible developmental differences between the two and the strong likelihood that youth will confess to a delinquent act almost immediately.

A Choice Outstanding Academic Book

By championing the ideals of independence, evangelism, and conservism, the Southern Baptist Covention (SBC) has grown into the largest Protestant denomination in the country. The Convention's mass democratic form of church government, its influential annual meetings, and its sheer size have made it a barometer for Southern political and cultural shift. Its most recent shift has been starboard-toward fundamentalism and Republicanism.

While the Convention once ofered a happy home to Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, and church-state separationists, in the past two decades the SBC has become an uncomfortable institution for Democrats, progressive theologians, and other moderate voices. Current SBC member-heroes include Senators Trent Lott and Jesse Helms. Despite this seeming marginalization, Southern Baptist politicians have grown from political obscurity to occupying the four highest positions in the constitutional order of succesion to the presidency. President Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, Senate President pro-tempore Strom Thurmond, and House Speaker Newt Gingrich are all Southern Baptists.

In its emerging Republicanism, the SBC has taken on characteristics of its more active fellow travelers in the Christian Right, forging alliances with former enemies (African Americans amd Roman Catholics), playing presidential politics, establishing a Washington lobbying presence, working the political grassroots, and declaring war on Walt Disney. Each of these missions has been accomplished with calculating political precision.

The Rise of Baptist Republicanism traces the Republicanization of the SBC's Republicanism in the context of the rise of the Fundamentalist Right and the emergence of a Republican majority in the South. Describing the SBC's political roots, Oran P. Smith contrasts Baptist Republicans with the rest of the Christian Right while revealing the theological, cultural, and historical factors which have made Southern Baptists receptive to Republican/Fundamentalist Right influences. The book is a must read for anyone wishing to understand the intersection of religion and politics in America today.

At the beginning of the 21st-century, a vanguard of young, affluent black leadership has emerged, often clashing with older generations of black leadership for power. The 2002 Newark mayoral race, which featured a contentious battle between the young black challenger Cory Booker and the more established black incumbent Sharpe James, was one of a series of contests in which young, well-educated, moderate black politicians challenged civil rights veterans for power. In The New Black Politician, Andra Gillespie uses Newark as a case study to explain the breakdown of racial unity in black politics, describing how black political entrepreneurs build the political alliances that allow them to be more diversely established with the electorate. Based on rich ethnographic data from six years of intense and ongoing research, Gillespie shows that while both poor and affluent blacks pay lip service to racial cohesion and to continuing the goals of the Civil Rights Movement, the reality is that both groups harbor different visions of how to achieve those goals and what those goals will look like once achieved. This, she argues, leads to class conflict and a very public breakdown in black political unity, providing further evidence of the futility of identifying a single cadre of leadership for black communities. Full of provocative interviews with many of the key players in Newark, including Cory Booker himself, this book provides an on the ground understanding of contemporary Black and mayoral politics.

Taken together, the primary texts and essays assembled in this book reverse traditional beliefs about the rise and fall of Arabic science, demonstrating how the traditional “age of decline” in Arabic science was indeed a “Golden Age” as far as astronomy was concerned.

Some of the techniques and mathematical theorems developed during this period were identical to those which were employed by Copernicus in developing his own non-Ptolemaic astronomy. Significantly, this volume will shed much-needed light on the conditions under which such theories were developed in medieval Islam. It clearly demonstrates the distinction that was drawn between astronomical activities and astrological ones, and reveals, contrary to common perceptions about medieval Islam, the accommodation that was obviously reached between religion and astronomy, and the degree to which astronomical planetary theories were supported, and at times even financed, by the religious community itself. This in stark contrast to the systematic attacks leveled by the same religious community against astrology.

To students of European intellectual history, the book reveals the technical relationship between the astronomy of the Arabs and that of Copernicus. Saliba’s definitive work will be of particular interest to historians of Arabic science as well as to historians of medieval and Renaissance European science.

About the Author

George Saliba is Chairman of the Department of Middle East and Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University in the city of New York, and Professor of Arabic and Islamic Science at the same institution. He works mainly on the history of Arabic astronomy, with a special interest in the development of planetary theories. He has won many grants and awards from various organizations including the National Science Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His current research involves the extension of the survey presented in History of Arabic Astronomy to include the centuries before the eleventh and after the fifteenth.

Words of wisdom from a great man

Ladislas Orsy is one of the grand old men of the Vatican II Church, and as both a canon lawyer and a theologian he has trenchant and loving words to say about a number of facets of today's Roman Catholic Church. This book is a delight in its wisdom and humanity and it suggests a way beyond pointless wrangling between ideological liberals and conservatives. A splendid diagnosis of the state of the Catholic Church today

If you want to understand why it's theologically and morally indefensible for the church to maintain it's current highly centalized and authoritarian organizational structure, this is the book for you. It describes specific actions taken by the popes and the Roman Curia since the end of the Vatican Council and how these actions have moved the Church in the opposite direction of where it needs to go if it is to really understand and implement (or as Orsy says, receive) the Council.

He talks about the theological understanding of the Church as a communion and how operationally everything should flow from that. He explains how the current structure of episcopal conferences compromises the proper communion of bishops (and why this goes against tradition and is theologically untenable). He explains how a recent canon law excludes the laity from governance of the church (and why this goes against tradition and is theologically untenable), how canon law should be received and the underlying theology of this reception, and how development of canon law has been paralyzed since the Council (and why this goes against tradition and is theologically untenable). He addresses the issue of the administration of justice in the church by setting Church justice side by side with secular legal wisdom and showing how short it falls in comparison. He then takes apart "definitive doctrine," a new category of doctrine created by John Paul II which is not "infallible" but which nevertheless is "irreformable" (i.e., can't be changed) - a logical inconsistency on the face of it.

His precise diagnosis of the developments that have moved the Church towards a strangling authoritarianism in the years since the Council (and the flawed theology and misreading of traditon upon which they stand) point the way to future reforms. No ranting here, just a statement of the truth of things from an esteemed Jesuit canon lawyer.

He says, "I wish to present my opinions as insights, proposed for debate. Nothing more, nothing less. ... In probing the insights, a good step forward is to offer them to the living community: let the believers' sense of faith judge them. Let the insights become disputed questions. Disputations in the spirit of openness and charity always had a place of pride in the intellectual history of the Christian community. St. Thomas of Aquinas was a supreme master of it. He liked to preface his affirmations by contrasting questions. Such a venerable tradition should not become extinct. After all, the entire body of the faithful has been entrusted with the fullness of the evangelical message. Hence, no one should ever be left out of the process of seeking its fuller understanding." (p. xii)

"We need an environment where Christians are increasingly free to use their gifts of grace and wisdom and where the Holy Spirit is not hampered by our rules." (p. xiii)

"To cling to structures and norms that were historically conditioned and that the church is leaving behind would be to opt for stagnation and demise. ... Excessive attachment to the ways and means of a remote past is a deadly apostasy from the life-giving present." (p.13)

His book is written elegantly, imbued with the Spirit, full of anecdotal reference and accurately presents the heart of the current differing currents within the church. He argues that the spirit of Vatican II remains a source of inspiration today and offers some insights on how that spirit can be made manifest.
