Dianne Bergant, CSA, is the Carroll Stuhlmueller, CP, Distinguished Professor of Old Testament Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. She is a past president of the Catholic Biblical Association. Her many books include Scripture: History and Interpretation, the two New Collegeville Bible Commentary volumes on Psalms, and the two-volume Israel’s Story, all from Liturgical Press.

Cackie (Catherine) Upchurch is the director of Little Rock Scripture Study and has written study guides and wrap-up lectures for this biblical ministry. She earned both a BA and MA in theology and is actively involved in a variety of adult faith formation efforts in the Diocese of Little Rock in Arkansas.

Historical and spiritual delight

After one reads Guigo on the practical discipline, this is the finest work I've ever found, giving a rich and packed historical theology of the Christian experience of reading, meditating and praying Holy Scripture. Highly, highly recommended and rooted in a sound theology of the written Word.

Be inspired to read God's Inspired Word

This is a really excellent book introducing Lectio Divina, and an enjoyable read. The author make an excellent case for praying the bible -- the ancient art of lectio divina. I gave the book a four star rating because it does not have as many of the "helps" other books on the topic have. However it will get you started with lectio divina, and should help you approach the discipline with the right attitude.
The author focuses a lot on inspiration. The same Spirit that inspired the Biblical writers, also inspires the text as we read it, and continues to inspire it as He applies it to our lives. Magrassi helps you expect God to work in you, as you contemplatively read and pray the scriptures.
This book has a wealth of quotes from the contemplative tradition spanning the history of the Church. I'd buy the book for the quotes, alone! There are also good footnotes for all the citations. Sometimes it is as if the saints from the past were writing the book; Magrassi weaves the quotes so well into his message.
Mariano Magrassi is a Catholic Archbishop, but this book is theologically neutral. As a Protestant, I found the book easy to receive. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.
To summarize from the book, quoting Smaragdus:
"Reading enables us to learn what we do not know, meditation enables us to retain what we have learned, and prayer enables us to live what we have retained. Reading Sacred Scripture confers on us two gifts: it makes the soul's understanding keener, and after snatching us from the world's vanities, it leads us to the love of God" (p. 20)

Beautifully written and compelling overview of lectio divina

This book is incredible—short, accessible, inspiring, thoroughly cited, and eminently quotable. I read a library copy in three days and, since I couldn't mark it up, I ended up using sticky tabs everywhere. About halfway through I decided I needed to own this book. There are SO many quotes and references to a whole world of literature on lectio divina, especially from the early church fathers and medieval period. You will also be introduced to a number of medieval characters you've probably never heard of before. Magrassi is a beautiful writer in his own right. However, the book as a whole is like a skillfully arranged mosaic—the patristic and medieval quotes are seamlessly integrated into Magrassi's own writing, style, and thought.

The book functions on two levels. First, it is a quick-moving yet impressive introduction to lectio divina. Second, it is a sustained argument for the rediscovery and practice of lectio divina today. In Magrassi's mind, piety and exegesis have been wrongly cleft. Our pride swells because of the advent of scientific methods applied with analytical rigor while our spiritual bellies swell because of malnutrition and starvation. Magrassi shows us how differently the church approached Scripture before the advent of scholasticism—as a source of living water, a kiss of eternity, a living Book, the saving power of God, an inexhaustible mystery, a mystical container of Christ. The connection between reading and prayer is stressed throughout, as is the indispensability of a deep, experiential encounter with the living, person of Christ as we appropriate the sacred text.

This book is not intended to function as a step-by-step "field guide" to prayed reading. Rather, it sets forth the richness of the historical tradition, the key ideas and the concrete dispositions employed, and ends with a terse summary of the four acts of lectio divina. The tone Magrassi writes with may be called "impassioned academic."

I completely disagree with the 2 star review by N Pemberton below. I didn't find anything confusing about this book. The only way I could see that being the case is if you have never read a semi-scholarly Christian book. But even if you are only familiar with the style of C. S. Lewis, that would easily prepare you for this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to deepen their experience of reading Scripture.

Huna, Culture Heros and the Eternal Dreamtime

This is an excellent, if somewhat dated, book about the myths, legends and religions of the South Pacific. The introduction gives an overview of the various peoples and culture groups of Oceania, including the Australian aborigines (the indigenous people of Australia), the Melanesians (darker skinned people of New Guinea and other parts of the western Pacific), the Micronesians (the native people of the small islands in the north west Pacific just east of the Philippines) and the Polynesians (the fair skinned people native to most of Oceania, including New Zealand, Hawaii, Easter Island, Samoa and so forth). These distinctions aren't always accurate and aren't quite PC, but they do give a good idea of the general range that is covered, and allow the author to focus on common themes in specific areas. Theres also a wonderful map that shows the culture area and (in the case of New Guinea) goes into tribal territories.
From there, it goes on to focus on myths by area, starting off with the Polynesians. It gives a nice overview of the highly organized and structured society that the Polynesians lived in (until the coming of the Europeans that is), and the important social positions of the ali'i (chiefs), kahunas (shaman/priests), arioi (entertaines) and so forth held. Mixed in with the creation stories and tales of Gods and Heroes like Tu, Tane, Rongo, Tangaroa, Pele, Hina and Maui, we are given a wealth of illustrations and photos. There are excellent examples of hei-tikis, featherwork, the stone heads of Easter Island, Maori carvings and designs, and numerous other Polynesian crafts. Following this we go into a brief exploration of the Chamorro and other peoples of Micronesia. Here the main focus was on trickster heroes like Olifat, Motikitik and Nareau. Again, there are some great pictures, including wooden boats from New Ireland, navigation charts, boars tusks and stone disks from the Yap Islanders and such. More material is available in the next chapter, which covers the Melanesians. The introduction does a good job of pointing out just how diverse Melanesian society is. Various common themes, such as snakes, hero twins, culture heros and the fate of the souls after death (the Melanesians have a complex theology with multiple souls and both reincarnation and afterlifes) are explored. Some wonderful example of Melanesian art, including some pieces from the Sepik River region, are shown. And finally the book closes out with Aboriginal myths and talks about the sacred male-dominated rites of the Koori, the importance of the Dreamtime, totemism, initations, and numerous myths. I'm somewhat mixed about depicting sacred rites, sites and objects (that is somewhat demeaning), but the dot art is really wonderful.
Overall, this is a pretty good book and I would recommend it to you, but you should be aware a more recent revision was issued in the 80s, with some expanded material. Eiter one is nice enough, assuming that you can get your hands on it. Its a nice introduction to Huna, the Dreamtime and other aspects of Pacific Islander religion and mythology.

In Disabled Education, Ruth Colker digs deep beneath the IDEA’s surface and reveals that the IDEA contains flaws that were evident at the time of its enactment that limit its effectiveness for poor and minority children. Both an expert in disability law and the mother of a child with a hearing impairment, Colker learned first-hand of the Act’s limitations when she embarked on a legal battle to persuade her son’s school to accommodate his impairment. Colker was able to devote the considerable resources of a middle-class lawyer to her struggle and ultimately won, but she knew that the IDEA would not have benefitted her son without her time-consuming and costly legal intervention. Her experience led her to investigate other cases, which confirmed her suspicions that the IDEA best serves those with the resources to advocate strongly for their children. The IDEA also works only as well as the rest of the system does: struggling schools that serve primarily poor students of color rarely have the funds to provide appropriate special education and related services to their students with disabilities. Through a close examination of the historical evolution of the IDEA, the actual experiences of children who fought for their education in court, and social science literature on the meaning of “learning disability,” Colker reveals the IDEA’s shortcomings, but also suggests ways in which resources might be allocated more evenly along class lines.

About the Author
Raymond E. Brown, S.S., (1928-1998) was the Auburn Distinguished Professor of Biblical Studies at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He was author of some forty books on the Bible and past president of three of the most important biblical societies in the world. By appointment of two popes (Paul VI in 1972, John Paul II in 1996) Brown was a member of the Roman Pontifical Biblical Commission. Time magazine called him "probably the premier Catholic Scripture scholar of the U.S."

A Once and Coming Spirit at Pentecost

Using the mass readings for the weeks following Easter, Raymond Brown tours Acts (with some detours into Luke and John) to explain the role of the Holy Spirit in the early (and contmeporary) church. Catholics, Protestants and charismatic Christians will all find Brown's combination of theological and devotional insight spiritually nourishing. Not difficult reading. He makes clear much that tends to be confusing.

Material We Don't Often Pay Attention To. (Though We Should!)

As Christians, it is easy to fall into the trap of losing focus on events after the Resurrection of Christ. To be sure, we do have the Sunday of Pentecost. (Descent of the Holy Spirit) But it is not the mass that Easter is. We also have movies like "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "Jesus of Nazareth" to portray the events of the Gospels. But we have little more than the Bible itself to tell of the events after Jesus ascended into heaven.

Father Brown points out that as Christians, we should know the OT. Partially, because in the OT, the Jews follow God even though he is not physically present. While Moses and a few others had the luxury of talking to God, the majority of Jews only heard God through the prophets. And that is essentially the same pattern for us after Jesus ascends into heaven.

Most of us probably remember that Peter had some issues with anger in the Gospels. And most of us probably know he denied Jesus 3 times. But how many of us recall that after Jesus ascended into heaven, Peter continued the work of Jesus? In the Book of "Acts," Peter heals the ill and crippled. He also casts demons out of people.

Father Brown shows us that the changes from Judaism to Christianity were not overnight. For some time, the early Christians still observed Jewish customs. Why not? Jesus observed Jewish customs such as the Passover even though he was in the process of changing it.

The clashes between Jews and Christians most probably came when the Gentiles came into the picture. The Jews did tolerate Christianity for a while, but then tolerance usually has its limits. Eventually, the Gentiles became the better candidates for conversion, and many of the Jewish rituals and ways such as circumcision, observation of the Sabbath, and the Kosher laws had to go if the Gentiles were going to become Christians.

To be sure, the church leaders Peter, Paul, and James did not always agree on these things. But it was clear that if they tried to retain the Jewish laws and customs, that Christianity would not survive. (Even in religion, we have to some extent know where the market is.)

Overall, this is a wonderful book that focuses on material we often neglect. If you like this book by Father Brown, be sure to check out his "A Crucified Christ In Holy Week."

The Understanding of Pentecost Is Expanded through Brown's Writing

This book contains five very accessible and useful essays about the Christian feast of Pentecost, written by an important Scripture scholar. Father Brown explores the historical context of the events of the coming of the Holy Spirit to the newly formed Christians, deeply imbedding his ideas in the study of the New Testament books of Acts and John. The reader will gain an expanded understanding of the beginning of the Christian church through Dr. Brown's writings. They always contain thought provoking scholarship, and this volume is another stimulating sampling of his fine mind.

Very useful book

For me, as a beginner in sales and non-English native speaker, this book helped me quite a lot in writing sales letters to new customers. Before I knew only old-fashioned, boring phrases. And now I see that I improved quite a lot (especially when I am comparing them to my colleagues' who are still using the old style.)
