Worth a read

Suzanne Caplan has a lot of experience to share. This book would be great for anyone starting a business for the first time. I expected more advice for women and minorities on how to handle discrimination problems. Caplan was very thorough on her coverage of starting a business. Chapter 13 was particularly useful with the checklist for "Getting ready to open".

An excellent overview

I strongly recommend Klaus Schatz "Papal Primacy" for any who want balanced overview of the history of primacy in the papacy. While maintaining the validity of Catholicism's current perception of the papacy, Schatz attempts to mark out the road that lead to this understanding with honesty and impartiality towards its adversaries. Of additional value are the extensive footnotes Schatz uses to document his account. These are useful in their own right for any interested in doing further research into the foundational primary and secondary texts.

Briefly, he organizes the primacy history around the theme of a central concept of raw and largely undefined initial primacy that then goes through subsequent historical interpretations, including the conversion of aristocratic Rome, the Germanic migration into Europe, Feudalism, the rise of absolute monarchism, and then the enlightenment and modernity, each with its own perception of what that primacy meant. Through this churning kaleidoscope of historical context, he records the contests the papacy had for supremacy in the Church with the Roman empire, other episcopal sees in both the East and West, Western European kingdoms and conciliarism, with the culmination of its victory over these various forces in Vatican I.

Vatican II is viewed very much as a work in progress, and with its integration with Vatican I still in doubt, Klaus ends with a note of caution that its efforts to rebalance Catholic ecclesiology with greater collegiality and a communio based ecclesiology are in danger of being perceived in opposition to Vatican I with a renewal the sorts of contests that ultimately rejected Gallicanism in favor of Ultramontanism.

Excellent!!

This is a very worthwhile book, and does much to explain the development of papal primacy over the centuries. Schatz is well-balanced; he doesn't flinch from episodes in history that call into question this doctrine, nor does he hesitate to show where it was clearly exercised in the past.

Some who are orthodox Catholics may object to this book, as it admits that papal primacy has developed, and is not practiced today exactly like it was practiced in the early Church. But Schatz is simply relating the true story, in all it's fullness. I consider myself a faithful and orthodox Catholic, and I think this book should be required reading for anyone - Catholic or non-Catholic - who wishes to understand this often-misunderstood doctrine.

Refreshing work of European scholarship

Schatz brings a refreshing work of outstanding historical scholarship and theological analysis on the development of the primacy, unlike his North American counterparts. He assumes a Catholic readership and a basic background of patristics and church history. He avoids the common historical pitfalls that are typical of current polemical discussions, where even Catholic apologists sometimes hastily introduce modern concepts into the early developments of the Church. Rather, he asks how the standards for Church unity were established and what the significance of the Roman church was in that context?

Gelpi, S.J., shows in The Gracing of Human Experience how to enlarge on the thought of Charles Sanders Peirce in order to formulate a metaphysics of experience. Gelpi implements the strategy suggested in the final chapter of Varieties of Transcendental Experience for regrounding theological thinking in a development of Peirce's semeiotic realism. He establishes a fruitful dialogue between dialectical and foundational thinking in developing a theological doctrine of supernatural grace.

The Gracing of Human Experience is divided into three parts. Part one compares and contrasts twelve major frames of reference for examining the relationship between nature and grace. Part two argues that the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce avoided the misconceptions which skewed the understanding of that relationship, providing a new frame of reference for rethinking the theology of grace. Part two also shows how the insights of other American philosophers have revealed undeveloped aspects of Peirce's thought. Gelpi discusses Josiah Royce's absolute pragmatism and John Dewey's instrumentalism. He then argues that the social psychology of George Herbert Mead offers a psychology better matched with Peirce's thought than the individualism of William James, and that the sociology of knowledge developed by Peter Berger and Thomas Luckman builds constructively on Mead's insights.

In Part three, Gelpi proposes a metaphysics of experience derived from his philosophical analysis. That metaphysics draws on the dialectical analysis of the American pragmatic tradition undertaken in Part two. Gelpi then develops an understanding of supernatural grace as the transmutation and transvaluation of human experience. The term "transmutation" describes change conceived on a model in which the introduction of a new element into an experience requires re-adjusting all the other elements which make up that experience. "Transvaluation" indicates the kind of transmutation of human evaluative responses which occurs when one's frame of reference for understanding reality is shifted. Finally, Gelpi describes how justifying faith provides a graced frame of reference for re-evaluating every other dimension of human experience.

It is difficult to appreciate how Stephen qualifies as a friend of someone who attended and approved of his murder (Acts 7:58; 22:20). Yet Stephen belonged to the very group of Israelites to whom Paul later brought the Good News: the Hellenists. These Israelites lived mainly outside ofPaulestine, thoroughly acculturated in the Greek language and culture of their habitat, and they practiced their traditions in a very modified way. These modifications created great difficulty for Stephen and other Hellenists who resumed residence in Jerusalem, as we read in Acts 6 '7. In this account we learn who Stephen was, what he said, and how he died 'al things that made a huge impression onPaul. That experience set the stage for Paul's commissioning by the risen Jesus to evangelize Hellenists (Acts 9). In Stephen: Paul and the Hellenist Israelites, John J. Pilch reflects on Stephen as a Hellenist Israelite, a collectivistic person, a deacon (the word does not appear in Acts), and one who true to his tradition communicates with the world of God in alternate states of consciousness. This commentary shows that there is more than one way to read the biblical tradition and that it matters vitally how one reads it.Choosing the Better Part? examines a number of possible approaches to the texts (critical, literary, and narrative) and uncovers their presuppositions and their consequences helping both women and men, particularly those who preach and teach the Scriptures, to do so in a way that will promote a Church of equal disciples, where gender differences no longer dictate ministerial roles.

Reid has written this work not as the definitive interpretation of the Lukan stories of women, but as an aid in critical biblical study, coupled with reflection on experiences of the global community and reliance on the Spirit to "choose the better part" to bring fullness of life for al. Barbara E. Reid, OP, holds a PhD in biblical studies from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and is assistant professor of New Testament studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Her scholarly interests center on Luke- Acts,Paul, and feminist interpretation of Scripture. Her most recent articles appeared in Biblical Research, The Bible Today, and New Theology Review.

This work is a commentary on the passages in the Gospel of Luke in which women figure as characters and in the sayings of Jesus. These include the women of vision and spirit in the Infancy Narratives, the Galilean women who encounter Jesus, and the women empowered to serve. The method makes use of historical-critical, narrative, and feminist-liberationist approaches. This commentary is intended as a resource for students of the New Testament, pastors, seminarians, preachers, retreat directors, and Bible study groups.

About the Author
Barbara E. Reid, OP, is a Dominican Sister of Grand Rapids, Michigan. She holds a PhD in biblical studies from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, and is professor of New Testament and vice president and academic dean at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. Her most recent books are Taking Up the Cross: New Testament Interpretations Through Latina and Feminist Eyes (Fortress Press, 2007), The Gospel According to Matthew (Liturgical Press, 2005), Parables for Preachers (3 volumes; Liturgical Press, 1999, 2 , 2001), and Choosing the Better Part? Women in the Gospel of Luke (Liturgical Press, 1996). She is general editor for Wisdom Commentary Series (forthcoming from Liturgical Press).

Must read for students of Luke's Gospel

In the first chapter, Reid contends that "this book aims to show that there is more than one way to read the biblical tradition and that it matters vitally how one reads." She goes on state that her hope is that the book will help those "who preach and teach the Scriptures, to do so in a way that will promote a Church of equal disciples, where gender differences would no longer determine a ministerial roles." These are worthy goals and Reid is successful in meeting them. She has an excellent introduction in the first chapter which includes clear and readable explanations of contemporary forms of biblical criticism. I now understand Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza much better! - thanks to Reid. In chapter three Reid gives a thorough analysis of women's participation in the various forms of discipleship which is very helpful. The rest of the book includes her commentary on the women who appear in Luke's Gospel - both as characters and in Jesus' teaching. I found this book to be a good balance to Jane Schaberg's comments in The Women's Bible Commentary. I recommend this book as a must for all preachers, Bible teachers, and other serious students of the Gospel of Luke.
